Dear Friend,

I am extremely sorry to disagree with your choices.

Really Dronacharya story is a peculiar one in Maha Bharata.
A brahmin, who is supposed to teach shastas to his disciples in gurukulam as other Brahmin achaaryas ,he chose Dhnurvidya and learnt all the screts of that science.

Instead of choosing a place where kings will come by bare foot and do paada namaskaarams, he chose to be a teacher under Drutarastra's ,teaching Dhanurvidya to both Pandavas and kouravas. He became an employee and lost aacharya ship.
He had a soft corner towards Arjuna, as Arjuna was sincere disciple and learnt things speedily and used them sacredly. He promised Arjuna that he would make Arjuna the BEST DHANURVIDYA WARRIOR.
Then one day as all know Ekalavya came to Dronacharya while he was teaching the Dhanurvidya to his disciples.

Ekalavya spoke the truth fter saluting the Guru, tht he was the son of a Sudra (Erukala King) and begged to teach him too the science of Bow and Arrows,Dhanurvidya.

But Dronacharya, who is an employee ,appointed to teach kouravas and pandavas the Dhanurvidya ,refused and told Ekalavya that he will not teach to Sudras .But here Dronacharya allowed Ekalavya one concession.Dronacharya said to Ekalavya, that having come all the way, he can stand aside till evening and observe the lessons and practice of kouravas and pandavas his teaching and training ,in silence.
Si he indirectly allowed Ekalavya to see and learn some thing for a day.
For this Ekalavya has topay Gurudakshina.Dronacharya knew it and Ekalavya knew it.
So when Dronacharya found that Ekalavya was was going to be more talented than Arjuna,by his (Ekalvya's will power) as he gave word to Arjuna that he will make him the BEST, he asked Ekalavya the Gurudakshna ,legitimately due.But asking the thumb hurt Dronacharya too.But as he was bound by his promise to Arjuna, and Ekalvaya has to pay for that single day allowance, Dronacharya asked the thumb and rest is known to all.
But Dronacharya did not freely take Gurudakshina. For that one days indirect teaching he aallowed Ekalavya ,he became his Guru and Ekalavya his shisya. Please read the original scripture again and I think you will agree with me.

The actual answer is that Eklaya he was a hunter who live in the forest. If Eklaya was able to do what ARJUNA did in the ARCHERY it will be great problem to the animals which was living in the forest. Being a hunter he can hunt as he likes so inorder to save the forest the Dronacharya has asked Eklavya to give his thumb the thumb is the important one to have a control in the archery.
Dronacharya gave word to Arjuna that he will make him the BEST, Dronacharya found that Ekalavya was was going to be more talented than Arjuna, because e has the will power to defeat the ARJUNA. The will power can make even the Impossible as possible. So he asked Ekalavya the Gurudakshna ,legitimately due.But asking the thumb hurt Dronacharya too.But as he was bound by his promise to Arjuna, and Ekalvaya has to pay for what he has learned from the Dronacharya in the Informal Manner, Dronacharya asked the thumb and rest is known to all.
By this way Dronacharya saved the animals and also made the Arjuna the best archer in the world.

Dear Jitendra ji ,

I appreciate your effort of bring a most controversial page from our lost past for a review .

a. he was partial for Arjuna because of the attachment to Arjuna as He liked him very much

yes, this was one of the major factors .

b. He had ego that how eklavya did it without my permission

This again was a factor too !

c. He followed the Guru's Dharma as written in Shastras that sudra's are not elegible for the shastra vidhya ,hence refused once still Eklaya stolen the vidhya

NO NOT AT ALL - He did not follow the Guru Dharma but the prevailing Cast system

If he did have Krishna and the the following company - he would have adhered to his own dharma and not be a judges.

This again is one of the most controversial subject of the Maha BHARAta .

Dronacharya asked Eklavya's thumb of the right hand which is crucial to hold the arrow in archery as guru-dakshina.

The reasons 'c', and 'd' are what he used to justify that action of his to the public.

The reason in this particular case being his own ego, which was hurt as he had rejected tutoring Eklavya as he belonged to a low caste, still Eklavya having faith in Dronacharya takes him as his guru and learns all the skills of archery.

And also he feared that his promise to Arjuna to make his the best Archer of that time would hold no water if Eklavya were to compete with Arjuna.

Having done this he repeated this mistake of his with Karna too when Karna was in the same gymnasia on the behest of the King Dhritarashtra. He ignored Karna as Suyodhan (Duryodhan) had befriended him and Drona had a bias towards Pandavas as against the Kauravas.

Still History knows well that these two people became great warriors and earned a name for themselves for eternity.

Drona did this cause he had promised Arjuna that he would make Arjuna the best archer in the world and eklavya was clearly exceeding him in this department. As for stuff of him following the Guru's dharma, no where in the shastra is it mentioned that a shudra is not eligible for weapon education. If so had been the case why would have parshurama took karna (than known as a soota putra) as his deciple ?

So it was only his promise that he had made to arjuna that made him do this. Though there are instances enough in mahabharta that he actually wanted his son ashwathama to exceede arjuna in the art of archery , but it was not to be.

a. Fits almost perfectly, but it isnt the only reason. He wasnt just partial to Arjun, it also was a prestige issue for him. He indeed had promised Arjun that he would make Arjun the BEST in the world and indeed had refused to teach Eklavya. inspite of that Ekalavya learnt to be the great archer he was. It not only hurt his favourism but also his ego. And it meant that Arjun would not be the BEST if Eklavya remained at the skill level he was.

b. His ego was hurt. but not coz Eklaya did it without his permission, but that being a a great teacher of the rajkumar's he did not recognise talent and that a mere shudra kid excelled to such an extent.

c. it is NOT written anywhere in Hinduism that shudras are not to be taught. Varnas i.e. shudra, vani, kshatriyas etc were made in reality as mere designations to ppl. according to the work that they did. It indeed caught on a more discremenatory level when ppl stuck to the varna instead of lifestyles and varnas were given a more imp role.

d. this might partially have been the reason. It was also one of the reason when he had arranged a match between Arjun and Karna (one where they had to shoot when they hear a sparrow sing)

The first answer is the correct one. Dronacharya was fond of Arjuna, and he didn't like to think of Ekalavya becoming more powerful than his favorite pupil. But Ekalavya managed to overcome this handicap and became a great warrior, who eventually fought on the side of the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra War.

And I'd also like to clear up on what the Shastras say about Shudras. It doesn't say Shudras are inferior, but simply mentions that Kshatriyas alone deserve the knowledge of weaponry. But if a Shudra is commited, he can become a Kshatriya or a Brahmana. However, it is true that Kshatriyas, blinded by their prowess, looked down on Shudras.

none of ur answer satsified me.

as far as i can understand, the ego of Dronacharya was most hurted, that he is not only the person having the qualification to make anyone as the best archer. The live example of Eklavya was challenging his caliber in his own life, in front of his eyes. Moreover, he was unable to swallow the fact, that anyone is so capable to skill himself in an art for which a formal training was not imparted for a single day. That was a challenge to his teachings, that its not him who can make a great archer, but its the faith in oneself, which make way for supremacy.

Its a fact, since ages, that a teacher wants to see his pupil only at the top and Eklavya was an iconoclast in that meaning.

Eklavya cheated by learning archery hiding behind the bushes and listening to Dronacharya's instructions. This was wrong, so guru dron asked for his thumb so that he does not use stolen vidya

Same curse was given to karna, who cheated his guru
