i was wondering if this was true because some people had told me this...

scordare comes from ex- (out of) and cor, heart.. literally to expel something from the heart
whereas dimenticare comes from demens... expel something out of the mind.

which is for these two phrases:
non dimenticherò mai il mio primo amore
non scorderò mai il mio primo amore

i'm getting "i will never forget my first true love" tattooed in italian for my fiance. & if that is true i might as well go with scordero' for its orignial meaning.

Hi there! I'm Italian and my advice is to write "non scorderò mai il mio primo amore" it's much better than the first sentence you wrote.
It's not because its original but only because it's the way an Italian would say that sentence!

Non Scordero' Mail il Mio Primo Amore

_scordero'_ it's a classic word, that mostly professional people use....
Dimentichero' is fine as well.....Go with your instinct, at the end they both have the same meaning.....

I had just answered this!
cuore is heart, not cor.

non mai dimenticherò il mio primo amore

Whichever word you decide on, use YOUR word order - non dimenticherò mai... - not 'non mai dimenticherò...'

Some say that scordare is more poetic than dimenticare; but dimenticare takes in any subtle additional meanings of scordare so is the safer best, if you MUST have a tattoo.

On the word origins (Latin), scordare - from the heart; dimenticare - from the mind (older It. had dismenticare.)
