There are plenty of good guitar teachers out there, check out
your local paper first. look in the Yellow pages. search the
net. Don't be tempted to try on line lessons! Lessons will set you back around 20~25 pounds an hour with a pro teacher. Some will offer the first introductory lesson free as I do.
Learn your fingerboard that you know where every note is.
Practice, practice, practice 8 hours a day to become a god!
there are no shortcuts to becoming great, just practice talent
and hard grueling work. I would take you on myself but I live
in Japan. Stay motivated and the very best of luck to you.

There is no electric guitar for a beginner. You need to start with acoustic. It calluses your fingers faster. I thought the same thing you did when i first started playing, but I got an acoustic and i now realize that i did the right thing. But if you want an awesome guitar that is a little bit of both, get a semi-hollow body Ibanez...it is the best sounding guitar in the world if you ask me. And it can be played either way.

Maturity must first settle in as guitar expertise grows. Right now you are young and impressionable--always concerned what your peer group thinks of you and your actions.

As you set aside the things of youth you will be able to grow in developing your guitar technique and style--provided you learn the art of playing correctly the first time. Start now with purchasing simple beginner guitar books--methods 1, 2, & 3.

Concentrate on learning music theory that is in those books because notation will open the field of music beyond your dreams.

There have been guitar greats, geniuses too, that have excelled, but they did it through their natural talent, persistence, and willingness to subject themselves to the regimen of practice, higher learning, and application.

Well, there are lots of places to get started. Of course the best solution would be to get some private lessons locally. But if you don't want to look like a complete noob, i suggest you to take a look at some learning kits online. Some of them are better, some not. I've had success with this one http://leadguitarlesson.blogspot.com/ . It includes video tutorials that are easy to follow and lots of useful tips. As i suggested before, after you have basic skills, take some private lessons. And keep on practicing! Best of luck to you ;-)

I don't know where you can start, certainly you can get books and learn from them, and it will be challenging. You need to keep the passion, but keep it in line with your level of skill. EVERYBODY has to start someplace, if you are afraid of getting razzed for being the new beginner, think of it as merely a step that you have to take to get to your goal. If you want to be truly great, LEARN everything there is to know about music, DON'T play by ear and practise practise practise. I used to practise in a dark room which really gets you to know exactly where your fingers are at all times.

some times the best way to learn is to be self-taught, but you have to want it, you have to be patient and you have to be willing to mess up and be your worst critic.

Other than that you may want to talk to some friends who play guitar and see who taught them (don't always let them teach you not everyone is meant to be a teacher). Or just go to your local music store and see if they have music lessons.
