I don't know anything about cars but I am buying a car from a guy for cash. I was wondering, what do I have to do to get it transferred in my name? Go to the DMV? And... If I pay cash, how do I prove that I payed for it? Couldn't he say I never payed? And is there any other smarter method than cash? Thanks.

If you pay with a check, it would have to be certified because I don't think anyone would risk taking a personal check for a car. What you will need is a signed Bill of Sale along with the title. Make sure it's the correct title with no erasure marks. I will give you a link to a Bill of Sale and how to fill it out. Good luck. There is alot of other information on the site you may want to check out.

Do not pay cash. Write a cheque. That will give go a paper trail as proof you paid for the car. Where I live both buyer and seller go to the DMV. with the signed ownership of the car and in 2 min. the paper is transfered to you. Also get a receipt for the car,a hand written bill of sale-2 copy's , one for seller, one for buyer. Both signed.

In most states a car has a Title, (much like the deed to a house). Some states have registration certificates that serve as titles.
DO NOT pay anybody for a vehicle that doesn't have a title. - It might be stolen.
The seller must sign the title over to you to transfer ownership of the vehicle, and give you a bill of sale.
With the Title and bill of sale, you can register the vehicle in your name.

Write out a bill of sale with the date, amount paid, and if any warranty. Both you and he sign it and each of you keep a copy. Go to a Notary Public, and they will show you where to sign the title as purchaser, and where the seller will sign. Then the Notary will stamp his seal on it. Take it to the insurance co. and then to the tag co. and your set to go. All this takes about 4 hr. depending upon driving time, lines may be longer.
