Actually this is a great question- I am a Christian and I pray that I would make my choices based on what God desires. Even though I live in this world, I am not of it- because of Christ- however I am still human and I still can make bad choices, so I pray that I am sensitive to His Spirit. I pray my choices, please God first, and then help others- The greatest choice I need to chose to make everyday is "to love the Lord my God, with all my heart, mind, soul and strength-and love my neighbor as myself".

You have stated the question in a way that indicates that you can do either of the two but not both. It is undoubtedly possible to make choices based on both --- what you want in this world and what you want in the afterlife. What you want in the afterlife is dependent on what you want in this world. So, if you can manage to bring your whims and desires in tune with the requisites of a good life in this world as well as in the afterlife, you will surely make the correct choices with respect to both worlds. Now, you may be confused over what I mean by 'good life'--- well, just as they say 'All that glitters is not gold', so too, those things which seem to be good and attract us maybe detrimental to us in the end. For example, we may all want to earn huge sums of money and lead a good life, but it is a fact that amassing wealth does not ensure happiness, in fact, most people suffer from hypertension, insomnia and stress worrying about their wealth. Think about it carefully, you'll understand what I mean.

All major decisions are based on my hope to qualify for "the real life"; life without end on a cleansed earth, full of trusting, loving, healthy family members from among all the family of God.

You have to make choices that are pleasing to God 1st and then yourself.I choose to have Jesus in my heart because I am aware of the sacrifice He did for us on the cross and only through Him are we able to have eternal life. You have a great sense of peace where nothing in this world satisfies you like Jesus does. You look forward to spending eternity with God,the giver of all good!!!
In order to do that,God has rules, laws, commandments,a way of life for you to make it to His Kingdom. Its up to you to follow them or live your own ways and be an eternity without your creator and perrish in hell!!
God Bless
