They keep changing things, and it seems like the mormon people are gradually being allowed (not officially) to do more things and be more free. Seems like they're trying to change to be more normal.

I think most people would still consider mormonism very strange, compared to something like christianity.

That 12 million you claim is WAY off.
The number of mormons that actually go to church and do other mormon stuff is more like 5 million.

Normal...? My friend was LDS and promptly gave it up when he turned 18. I tried it once and was told it was my fault if I ever got raped--I dropped it like a coal. Now I'm Agnostic, it makes sense to me.

They are a mainstream religion, there are over 12 millon of them. Travel to AZ and you won't see a town without five or so LDS churches.

EDIT: Actually 12 million is what they teach in their church. There are Mormons all over the world--they send missionaries everywhere. I'm just saying what I heard them teach. Eerie, huh?

Heres a question I asked last week.

Hey Christians: (not LDS) If the KKK changed its ways and tried to be good, would you call them Christian?

These days every Joe Smith with a good salespitch is forming a church and calling themselves "Christian". Back in the 1800's several new religious groups sprouted up during the many revival movements that were happening back then. Darwinism was telling people that we all evolved and that the whites were the superior race. Some of the new religious groups used racism to attract the white slave owners.

Thats when the KKK sprang up. They claimed Christianity , yet practiced violent Racism.

If, over the years they slowly changed their ways to become more mainstream and attract new followers, they denounced racism and got a revelation to allow African Americans into the Priesthood, would you consider them to be Christian?

What if they changed their name to the Klan of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and told everyone to pray in the name of Jesus?

What if they said they believe the Bible as long as it was translated correctly?

That all sounds Christian to me. You think?

In response to you Mormon Lovers, why is it then that Brigham ordered that the African Americans could not EVER hold the Priesthood in this life. That order was not rescinded till Spencer Kimball did it 150 years later in 1978 as the result of public awareness of the civil rights movement !

The people were using Darwins book "The origin of the Species" to show that the human species evolved and since the Caucasians were the most advanced (industrially) we were somehow Superior. Therefore racism was OK.

I am not a racist. I ask this question in response to hearing every wacko religious group out there claim to be Christian just because they use the Lords name in their church

I don't know if "trying" is the right word. Mormons, since the inception of their religion, have always tried to keep up with the times. When it was clear polygamy was wildly unpopular with the gentiles, they dropped it. When it was clear that the church was being viewed as racist, they gave the priesthood to African Americans. Now, they have dropped certain rituals in the temples such as pretending to gut oneself and being almost naked.

Now they're propagating their belief in Jesus Christ and the Bible - again, making themselves more "Christian" which makes them more mainstream (save the comments, I KNOW that Mormons are indeed Christian). Like any successful enterprise, change is a must. Obviously, if Mormons were still taking multiple wives, they would probably all be in jail - not good for business, right?

Why wouldn't they try to have a mass appeal? They need that 10% to stay afloat and in order to get that, they need more and more members.

I know active LDS members hate what I have to say but I think it is naieve to believe that money talks for everybody except mormons.

We are Christian, thus the name the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints. But we won't get started on that one.

Whether you like it or not, we ARE one of the mainstream religions. The federal government asks the LDS for assistance whenever there is a natural disaster. So does the Red Cross and we are there to help. We don't have to stand up in church AFTER the fact and ask for members' help, we already have the stores of food and clothing and blankets, etc. to assist these people who have lost everything.

I don't think we're trying to be mainstream. We just want people to realize that we are "Christian." We worship Jesus Christ not Joseph Smith. When people say that we're not Christian it perpetuates that fallacy.

I can't remember if it was another question of yours, or if it was Cheese and Rice that asked about changes in temple ceremonies. We believe in change. We believe in revelation. I don't know if that change is going mainstream, I haven't noticed that.

what do you mean trying? They ARE! They have temples all over the place. There is a HUGE one just five miles away from where I live. An entire state belongs to them for crying our loud, and much of another one.

No, we will never be mainstream. Just because we claim to be christian does not mean we claim to be, or want to be, mainstream.
