Drona's action were based on his revenge for Drupad for which he knew only Arjuna can defeat him.

Drona followed his dharma and may have got Heaven...as following Dharma does not lead to Moksha.

He was certainly a dwarf before Bhishma

Bisham pitameh is the person who is of great person in the Mahabaratha is also in all the place where ever there was a evil occured but the Dronacharya who was a brahaman should not go back of the evil but the Krishna says in the Bagavatgita that everything is done by him only and even Dronacharya is also given some importance because of the place he was given to make the ARJUNA the number 1 in this world of ARCHERY.

Drona never followed his dharma. Here are a few instances of the same

1. He was a brahmin, so he had no right to be jealous of lustful of something. Yet he went to his child hood frnd Dhurpad demanding for half of Dhrupads kingdom. When he was refused he became so jealous that he asked his pupils to attack and capture Dhrupad.
2. As a teacher it was his duty to give equal knowledge to all his pupils, yet he was always partial towards Arjuna and Ashwathama.(remember that the art of breaking a chakra vyuh was only taught to Arjuna).
3. He says to karna (when karna comes to him asking to be his pupil) that his school is only ment for princes and khshatriyas. Yet he teaches his own son , a brahmin, at the same school, showing he twisted his rules based on his convineince.
4. During Kuruksherta, rules were laid before the start of war by Bhisma, that if a warrior is injured he will not be attacked and that one warrior would not be attacked by many at the same time. Yet once he is gone and drone is the senapati all these rules are broken by him when Abhimanyu is killed.

There are a number of more such instances. So i can safely say that Drona was not a follower of Dharma, and thus he did not attain Moksha.

Good question!!
Dronacharya had two or three negative points on which he could not have moksha:
1. He was partial to Arjuna, to the extent he demanded Ekalavya to offer his thumb as Guru Daxina, knowing fully well that he did not teach him at all.
2. He was vengeful to Drupada, his childhood classmate. His Guru daxina from the Pandavas was to tie him and lay him on his feet, which the Pandavas obeyed.
3. He derelicted his duty as the Commander-in-Chief of the army when he was slightly distracted by Dharmaraja's halftruth: "Ashwathama hathaha (kunjara)".
Maybe these points prevented him from attaining Moksha. Do u agree?

Tough question
Heres my two cents.......
Bhishm Pitameh got so much importance because he stuck to his oath for generations and guided so many of his descendants in being a good ruler. And he was always loyal to the throne.
Dronacharrya paid relatively less role in the Mahabharata.
That might be the reason.
