I think that being "politically correct" is a load of bull. We have to say things carefully so that we won't hurt other...how dense can people be? I mean, I've had people call me "decorated" instead of pierced! I sure wouldn't mind being called what I am, should anyone?

What do you guys think, for or against?

People attribute all kinds of behaviour to 'political correctness' that really has nothing to do with it.

To me, it's simply about being thoughtful of and caring for the feelings of others.

You may very not mind being called 'pierced', but it's not always about such superficial matters.

The fact is, you chose to be a 'pierced person', but no-one chooses to be called nasty names because they are different in some way to the mainstream.

When I was growing up, it was quite acceptable for people to refer to people in all sorts of nasty ways ~ black people were called 'b****s' quite routinely, immigrants were called wogs or wops, disabled people were called cripples or 'mongies', as though they had no feelings at all.

People were amazed to find that when it came down to it, what they called people was actually what they thought about people! So disabled people were seen as useless and found it almost impossible to get jobs, black people were considered dirty and dishonest and were badly discriminated against ... the list goes on and on.

Today, when we are irritated or amused at being called 'decorated' it is easy to forget there is a good reason to be 'pc' ~ words have a lot of power in our world, and we should be careful how we use them.

Best wishes and good luck :-)

Personally I hate it when people call me "Hispanic or Latina" It sounds retarded but I also don't want to be called a wet-back either. So how can we go on this political correctness?
I agree with you to an extant but I have my limits as I think everyone else does too. If you're pierced and don't like people calling you "decorated" then tell them. I told my friends and it's all going well.
Besides "decorated" makes you sound like a Christmas Tree so I see how that could offend you........lol Kidding. :D

Like everything in our society I definitely believe that political correctness is taken way to far. Esp. when it's disguised under the blanket of saving peoples feelings. I always tend to ask what about everyone else? Do our feelings NOT count? I don't believe in demeaning someone for who they are just for the fun of it, even if I don't believe them to be correct, but the instance that I'm told that I can't teach and practice my beliefs outwardly, just like other groups, that's when I become angry. People need to get the chips off their shoulders and get on with life. We ALL get our feelings hurt from time to time, that's called life.

Sometimes for, sometime against. It is so subjective. Who makes the rules anyway?
Why would decorated sound better than pierced? (Unless you are a Christmas tree)
I think some people make up these phrases for a joke. Then they wait and see how many people will emulate them.

Those who have created the politically correct atmosphere are the ones who cry for tolerance but only when it fits there agenda. It has given rise to groups of people with very thin skin a generation of cry babies and nay sayers. With no sense of self or humor.

I am against political correctness. It is a load of crap. Yes it hurts to be called or referred to by a derogatory term; but remember...ITS ONLY WORDS! Words can not hurt you unless you allow them too. Our time and energy would be better spent on nurturing our self esteem instead of censoring our vocabulary out of fear that we might hurt someone's feelings.

Being polite and tactful is one thing, but this whole PC crap has gone way overboard.

Christmas is Christmas, not winter holiday. Halloween is Halloween, not fall festival. Etc and so forth.

I happily hang around with people who are historians, and who are happily historically incorrect.

teach people to be offended at every little word, those with something truly important to say will just stop speaking, much to our collective loss.

How about common sense being asserted, as needed?

Reason:
Their are 911 plane flyers believing that they were being "political correct"?.....you got me?

Then there's a guy in the "white house" that strongly believes that he is politically correct, by waging war on behalf of his father.

Then there's the person who informed me, that Asian's do not want to be called "Oriental".....I respect that. People don't know, unless they are informed.

If you want to be called one rather than another. Tell them. I've found that people can't read minds......(some can't read period).

Don Imus lost his job, (I didn't agree) being "Politically Incorrect"?

It Didn't bother me, nor did it bother the woman's basketball team, until they were told............then a whole bunch of other black women jumped on the band wagon.....sometimes it goes too far, but whose to really say about another's comfort zone???

and the list goes on......................

Too broad a subject to be grouped into one category, really. I don't want the Ku Klux Klan being free to walk around verbally abusing people, but then you have your ridiculous extremes. There is middle ground, it's just that people are too stupid and want it one way or another.

At first politically correct only meant social awareness and sensitivity to others. I hate that human sensitivity to others has become political and 'political correctness' has come to encompass all manner of diversity among us
