Ask your vet to give you a product called Panalog ointment. It is an antifungal and antibiotic, and contains a steroid to stop itching. It's also oily,so it helps to smother any remaining ear mites, and it's safe to use in both dogs and cats.use it everyday for a week, then cut back to two or three times a week until the ears are cleared up.Clean the ears with an earwash (I recommend Vetsolutions Earwash - you can probably get it from your vet as well) and dry them with a paper towel or gauze before applying the Panalog, and your pets should be fine.

The vet could do a microscopic exam of the black stuff. It sounds like ear mites though. The vet I worked for also prescribed ear cleaning solutions for severe cases of mites. The owners were told to clean the ears using a gauze pad first, then treat with the mite meds. THis helps to open up the ear canal and get the meds down in to all those nasty mites. Ask your vet again or try another vet.

I don't know what it could be. Black stuff in cats' ears is usually ear mites and the wax that the cat's ear produces in response to the mites.

Is it possible that it is ear mites and the medicine simply wasn;t effective?

It sounds like it is making your cats miserable. I suggest you take them back to the vet or maybe just take the cat who has it worst, and see if there is something else you can try. Whatever that cat has, the others most likely have the same thing.

Don't put baby oil or alcohol or any over the counter medicine in their ears. Ears are very delicate and can be seriously damaged.

Take your cats to a different vet. If there's a veterinary medicine program at a college or university in your area, take them there - it could be an infection, or it could be a resistant strain of mites.

Whatever it is, if any of your pets HAVEN'T gotten this, keep them away from the ones who do, with their own food, water and litter box. And keep all of the affected pets away from other animals.

Back to the vet. The ears probably need a good cleaning first and if it isn't done the right way it can be painful. There's no substitute for good vet care. Try a different vet.

First off...clean the animals ears out before you freak out. They might just have bulid up ear wax. My dog gets it all the time. Took her to the vet and he said that they were not ear mites.

Everyone has said it already, it is ear mties. My female cat had them and her ears always looked dirty. When we took her to the vet he said no well then her ear filled with blood between the inside and outside and se had to have emergency surgery.
