My brothers and I are sick of our 26 inch standard tube television. We would like to buy a 32 inch LCD tv- they're fairly cheap these days-we're not looking for fancy or brand name, a 500-700 dollar model is fine. The thing is, we don't actually have HD programming, nor do we plan on getting it in the near future. Now, I've been under the impression that without an HD source, an HDTV will just bump up the standard def signal a bit, not to full HD, but it will still look pretty decent. But, someone told me today that this isn't true, and that without an HD source the tv will actually look WORSE. Which is true?? We're using it with a satellite and for PS2/Wii...will it still look alright?

It'll look OK, but yes you will see more noise if your SOURCE is Noisy....

That's why you make sure your Satellite is in Tip Top condition....good cables equals Clean Signals...

Analog broadcast pictures may look worse because the higher display resolution will show more noise. You can minimize this by keeping the sharpness control on the TV at a low setting. However, satellite TV is digital and it will look fine. In any case, by the time February 2009 rolls around, there won't be any more analog TV, and the broadcast digital TV picture (even non-HD) will look better on your set. Just make sure the set you buy has a built-in digital tuner so you will be ready in case you want to receive over-the-air broadcasts.

The HDTV will upscale the SD content into its native resolution, the content will remain of SD resolution. People sometimes say it look worse because the LCD screen will be of a higher resolution than your old CRT screen, thus, noise, compression artifacts, etc would become more evident.
On the plus side however, the progressive nature of the screen and its reduced flicker will be better for your eyes.

If the TV you are looking at is HDTV, in order for it to look its best, you should get an HD source. If its just Digital, Digital cable would make it look great.

The HDMI cable is the cable required to hook up an HD Direct television receiver on your HD television. in the adventure that your receiver isn't HD then you definitely might probably use a co-axial cable from receiver to television. it is what I had as quickly as I have been given my new LG HD liquid crystal reveal-television yet had to attend till my television provider provider gave me the HD Receiver. As others mentioned - no HD receiver - no HD television.

sure it will work. You won't get the best signal. The thing you might notice is how poor the regular broadcast signal is. The high quality of HDTV shows off all the poor signal of regular tv.

If you get a tv with a tuner astc tuner included you would only need an antenna to get local channels in HD.
