Why is butchering dog, serving and eating dog meat illegal?

It depends on the country, actually. China and a few others do serve dog, much to the shock of others who view dogs as pets. (Hence why you're getting a few of the outraged replies)

That is why it's illegal, too. It's harder to eat animals that a good chunk of the population is close to. So, cows in India, dogs in the United States, pigs in Islamic countries... they're valued as something more than meat, whether for religious reasons or companionship ones.

China does keep dogs as pets but they're not nearly as widespread as in the U.S. for example, which contributes to the difference in perception.

It probably has something to do with how animal diseases are transmitted to humans in addition to dog not being a traditional food in our Eurocentric culture.

It is legal in some states-I ate puppy stew at a Cherokee friend's birthday party when I was 12. I didn't know what it was until later, but it was good. I wouldn't do it again but it didn't kill me.
