I know Americans who live in Seattle and they don't know where British Columbia, Canada is. They have no clue if Canada is a country or if it is led by a president or prime minister. Heck they don't even know what a prime minister is. If Americans don't even know about their neighboring countries what do they know about any other countries? Is this a sign that they are uneducated or just self-centered?

Many Americans are ignorant because our public education system is a very very bad joke. I am a sub teacher and find that many of my students think that the US owns mexico or vice versa. They and their parents are so wraped up in their shallow ignorant lives that they dont care. But dont feel bad, countless Americans know very little about their own country. So its not personal.

Because our retarded school system has taken much of that knowledge out of the scope and sequence...many high schoolers aren't even required to take history anymore. So not only don't they know the foundation for their own country, they know absolutely squat about any other country as well. Nice, huh?
Yet another reason we homeschool...by the way, my 5th grader knows where Canada is, where most of the provinces are, that the "president-type-person" is called a Prime Minister, and what the flag looks like. He also knows this for pretty much every 1st world - and several 2nd and 3rd world - countries around the globe.
See, we're not all ignorant! :-)

During my last visit to that country, I slowly realized that while on the whole Americans are decent,open,fun loving,helpful,caring and 'private',most of them are just literate but neither are formally educated nor learned.Immersed as they are in their small worlds,they have neither the curiosity nor the inclination to look aroud and try to be aware of the world at large.It's quite baffling and puzzling in the beginning but the resons are not far to seek.In nutt shell,they have been living a protected life for too long,thanks to the facts of being citizens of the most successful largest functional democrcy in the world coupled with national and personal wealth and a world super power.Apart from the providence they have all the reasons to thank their elders and great grand fathers,who worked hard and gave their days to make life as 'Happy days' for the generations to come.

Uneducated, with no desire to shake off their ignorance.
And this does not apply to all Americans. Some are quite aware of the rest of the world, and some are very willing to learn, but never find the opportunity.
I met a guy online from Lousiana. He's a great guy, but knew almsot nothing about Canada simply because nobody ever taught him, and he never had a pressing reason to go find out.

I think it's a bold statement that "Americans know nothing about any other country except their own."
Although this may be true for SOME Americans, it is not "eduacated" to assume that for the entire population.
I think that SOME Americans do not know about other countries' history due to lack of education.
