I helped plan part of the plan that Dick Cheney nixed, stating that he didn't like the number of people required to establish security in Iraq. When all of us planners added up our numbers, we came to around 500,000 troops. Cheney said he couldn't figure out why we couldn't do it with 100,000 and none of the higher military brass had the balls to tell him he was wrong.
I would dramatically increase the number of troops in Iraq, and I would also dramatically increase spending. As a function of GNP, there has been no war in the history of the United States that has cost so little. You get what you pay for.
Many people are of the opinion that the only thing required to complete the war is a political solution, but I can speak from experience when I say there is no political solution without security, and there is no security without giving those of us in the military the resources we require to get the mission done.
A stable Iraq on one side of Iran, and a stable Afghanistan on the other side would reap big dividends for democracy in the middle east for years to come. Now that we are in Iraq, we owe it to the Iraqi people to fix what we messed up for them.
If I were president, I would have listened to my military planners in the first place . . . . but hindsight is 20/20.
My 2 cents.

I didn't look at your blog, but to answer your question, (I'm assuming you mean the American President) Bush already said he couldn't win the war. Only the Iraq people can win it, like we Americans did in the civil war here. But things aren't looking so good in Iraq, it's not our war, we are just there trying to make it a stable and democratic place to live. By democratic, I mean where people can live if they choose to, get married if they choose to, buy and own property if they choose to, own a business if they choose to, or work for someone else if they choose to, or be a bum on the street if they choose to, etc, like America. It appears that the Iraqi folks don't have the determination that our forefathers/foremothers had. I think it's a lost cause, and if I were an Iraqi American, I'd speak up and tell our President what he should do. They all seem to be quiet right now, when we need their advice the most.

1.) Ask for a declaration of war on Al Qaeda, the Taliban exiled government and any organizations that are currently dealing with either force.
2.) Tell politicians to get lost and make sure the military has all the funding they need to get the job done.
3.) Initiate total warfare, in that the military can do whatever the hell it wants whenever the hell it wants to quell the insurgency.
4.) Start training more Iraqi and Afghani military forces so we can get the hell out of there.

The war was won some time ago. In order to win the current internal civil war, I'd pull out, let them kill each other for a while then when they kill each other off, go back in and attempt to set up a new gov't again. Maybe after a few months of a blood bath, the regular citizens will finally step up and stop playing games like they are now.

I'd bomb Afghanastan and Iraq off the face of the map. And that's for starters. Forgive me for appearing to be racist but what good is coming out of those countries. They're just havens for terrorists. I'm sure there are some good people in those countries, but every war demands sacrifice. The reality is the world would be a safer place.

I would keep the arms manufacturers out of the picture, then I would give total control to my field staff!
I would freeze any and all political travel to the war zone.
and last but not least,
I would eliminate any family connections to the terrorists

Tell the military to win then keep all politicians out of it. Let the professionals do their job. It will never happen but shooting an even dozen of the loudmouth congressmen who are encouraging our enemies would go a long way to win the war!
