we just noticed a few minutes ago; it appears as though one of his claws was ripped out. blood isn't actually coming FROM it, it seems kind of pooled up in the space where the claw was, or hardened or something -- i'm not keen on touching it to see what consistancy it is.

anyway, he doesn't seem so upset -- he's sleeping away, curled up on the chair. my mother also wasn't very concerned at all, just disturbed since, well, she finds that sort of thing disturbing.

i really doubt this calls for, like, vet care or anything,
but i need to know,
should i help him in some way? put something on it or something? i can't even tell if he's in pain, does it hurt?

If it is not actively bleeding then by all means leave it alone. If you bother it you may get it started bleeding again and this type of injury can be difficult to stop the bleeding since the nail appears to be ripped out. You want to leave the scab alone. Cats are pretty tolerant of pain. It will be sore though. You need to keep a close eye on the foot. If it starts swelling or he is unable to bear weight he needs to get to the vet in case of infection or injury to the bone of the foot. If all goes well it should heal, it will take the nail quite a long time to grow back. Typically this type of injury occurs when the claw gets stuck in fabric such as furniture or carpet flooring. Trimming the nails, just by nipping off the little hooks will help to prevent this in the future.

Leave it alone unless it starts to look swollen, red, oozing, or if he starts limping or licking at it obsessively, as that could mean it's infected. If you do see something like that, then see the vet for antibiotics. The blood looking thing is probably the quick, which is the "root" of the nail. The quick may be scabbed over as well. It will probably grow back, just like if you've ever dropped something heavy on your foot and lost a toenail. And like losing a nail, it's probably a little sore, but less painful than if the nail was still hanging there.

You did the right thing by cleaning it with peroxide spray or even peroxide from the bottle. If it's stops bleeding then you may not have anything to worry about, but i would keep an eye on it for a few days. If it doesn't look like it is healing or if he acts like it is giving him some pain, then i would suggest he needs to see the vet. I had a dog that did this very same thing twice actually, and i had to take her to the vet both times, but it was bleeding pretty bad, and the vet had to wrap it up both times. She healed just fine and had no problems after wards. Main thing is to keep an eye on it, and keep cleaning it with the peroxide for a couple days. Poor thing :( Hope he gets recovers quickly!

It will hurt him if you touch it, but it's not a vet worthy trip. He pulled the nail sheeth off the claw. Sometimes this bleeds like crazy, sometimes it doesn't but it does ache.

If it's bleeding, try dabbing his toe into cornstarch, it'll help the blood stop. If it's not bleeding, just leave him alone. It's like us banging our finger so bad our fingernail falls off.

It'll grow back fairly quickly. There's not much the vet can do other than tell you not to touch it. We've had this happen to three of ours over the past 15 years. Usually it involved them catching the claw on something and gettingit wedged tight, then they pulled to get loose and lost the claw sheath.

It'll be sore, it's like us losing a fingernail after slamming our finger in the door. Keep an eye on it for a day or so, with the bleeding. But it'll form a new nail in a week or two. Not to worry.

It's fairly common for cats to get a claw caught in something and when they pull free sometimes they lose a claw. The claw will grow back.
It would be OK to put a small amount of triple antibiotic salve on it.
The cat may feel some pain, but if he's sleeping, it isn't bothering him too much.
