Stating one is a humanist, is just taking atheist one step further, and giving you an idea of what their ethics are as well....
Atheist does not seek to define a person's ethics and morals. Atheist is simply a non-belief in god, gods, and supernatural.
Humanists' are also atheists, but also believe in doing what one can to make the world a better place for all humans...although, atheists may also believe this, they also may not....
So stating atheism, doesn't give you much to go with. Humanism just gives you a little more to base your ideas about the person on..

Secularism is pretty much inevitable as an atheist, if you mean that they deny a God or gods existence. however it does not rule out being a humanist at the same time.
Secularists do not, by their account of things, deny significance of life necessarily in their rejection of God.
Humanism, which is usually a belief in some sort of value or dignity to human life that lends it meaning is fairly optional, however.
An alternative would be egoism ('selfishness') or some form of nihilism (denying that there is any enjoyment or significance in living--even of the temporal sort humanists claim to enjoy).
Short answer: Secularism is a basic principle of atheism; humanism is more of a 'denomination.'

No. Humanism and secularism do not deny religion, they just believe that religion belongs to the sphere of each individual to accept as he/she determines, and that most dealings with humans of different religions can be controlled by a common bond of agreed-upon ethics.
Mainly, a red light or a stop sign means the same thing for Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians. This concept allows for people of different religions to coexist and work together.
Marxism, of course, is a religion that has co-opted atheism, and requires that the State be made Almighty.
Humanism and secularism should never be confused with Totalitarianism; in fact, they are mortal enemies.

I don't think there is any comparison as religion is not a secular movement and the political humanism is not a religion either . Atheist can fall into any group or none that don't subscribe to a god or no god philosphy. Some people label you just because you don't believe in that which is not verifiable . Most fall into the category of human just like yourself.

Not quite. Humanism and Secularism are factions of Theism or "Natural Religion." In both of these religious sects they still believe in a creator of some type. Humanists reject supernatural reasoning and think that morals and rights should be from human conditions instead of supernatural revelations.
It is very compatable with atheism but it does not require atheism or reject atheism. Like I said it is a philosophy that grew out of Theism.
Of interest:
Albert Einstein was a member of the advisory board for the First Humanist Council in the USA.

Non-Atheists can be Humanitarians or Secularists as well. They are not denominations of Atheism because they did not spawn from Atheism.
Most Christians are either Catholic or Protestants because the Protestants split from the Catholics about 500 years ago.

I see a diversity of answers here which onlly contradict one another, so I am giving you the "lowdown" from someone who is an "ordained" HUMANIST. Why would anyone be ORDAINED if we were part of "atheism ?" We, look at REASON and the LOGICAL points of view to all questions and answers concerning the divine. One of the BIGGEST parts we look at is PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Not many of the religious teach that we are AS God and should get off our knees and if things go wrong it is because WE are to blame, not some "devil" or "God." That's why we were born with BRAINS...........

Humanism and Secularism are denominations of atheism.
But not all atheists fall into these two groups.
Another denomination of atheism are the
"Wannabe Christians."
These are commonly found on Yahoo Answers.
If only they could loose their pride and be saved...........
Keep praying for them!

Humanists can be theists. Erasmus and Thomas More were Christian humanists. Secular humanists like Dawkins are generally atheists, but are sometimes theists who simply care more about our affairs than god's.
