So I leave my PS3 on to download some demos while I watch TV. After some time, maybe an hour or two, I notice the power is off. Not even a red light. So I flip the switch to turn it back on, hit the power button, green light pops on for a second then completely loses power again. I mess with the power cord, leave it off for a few minutes, and eventually I get the power working again. The system turns on properly, but now I get no picture or sound. I've tried different cables and resetting the video settings, nothing so far has worked. Is there any way I can fix this, or is my PS3 simply defective?

I'm a ps2/ps3 tech at a well-known software/hardware distribution company and we've been trying to solve this problem since the system was released. If you get no picture but have sound, the reset procedure usually solves the problem. However if you have both no picture nor sound, it is a problem with the motherboard and thus far we don't have a way of fixing that. If there is a way to repair it, only Sony knows and, of course, are closed-mouthed about it with us thus far. We attempt repair on roughly 500 ps3 systems on my shift at the warehouse and I'd say 80-85% of the systems we get in for repairs have this problem (or the red-light problem, where the system won't power up). Personally, I think the culprit is the large amount of heat the system produces (I know people who have had blue-ray disks ruined because of the heat). There's that to contend with, and Sony's famous reluctance to honor their warranties. Sorry for the bad news.

first check your setting and the connection make sure every right where they need to be....i would also suggest unplugging everything and then doing everything as far as connecting again....or i would say screw it just been a day you got bad luclk and got a defective one so go back to where you got it and get a replacement and if you did get it on ebay all you have to do is call sony and their replace it because of the year warranty NO ONE has had a ps3 for a year...not yet at least!!!

Make sure the PS3 is plugged in tightly and correctly. Also make sure the video cords are plugged in, the yellow, white, and red onces.
That's all I can think about...and make sure your on the right channel.
Either that or its defective.

I'm not really familiar with the PS3, but try checking the video output/input and audio output/input cables, and if that doesn't work, then look for the troubleshooting part of your PS3 manual, there should be one.
good luck.

it's defective. if it's only been a day, you could take it back to the shop to exchange for a new one. there's normally a 7-day exchange policy. but if you bought it on ebay, you've been had!

maybe you should try to restore your PS3 system. this is located in system settings. but you will lose all your items on your hard drive. so back them up.
