without expecting any gratitude in return?

I subscribe to the thought that if you give anything that it will come back many fold. My wife is not well, and we just went to see our son and his family for for what was suppose to be a week, I extended the visit by 4 days because she wanted too, and then I drove 625 miles of 775 so that she wouldn't have to do very much of the driving. We have kept our son who is developmentally disabled for 36 years, that is everyday and he requires care just like a infant. This past Christmas a family in my neighborhood was having kind of a hard time of it, we went to the store and bought big Christmas ham and all of the fixings, if there had been small children we would have bought a bunch of gifts for the kids, but there aren't any. She didn't even say thank you but we got our thank-you from inside of our selves,......and I am OK with that. We give money to a church (not of our faith) that we do not attend, we give money to a Catholic mission. These get paid just like they were bills. There was a movie a few years ago called, Pay it Forward, it was saying pretty much how we feel about the way things should be. I used to help folks in Germany find them selves homes to live in, I would do their translating and use my own car to take them looking, the only thing that I would say when they wanted to give me money or pay for my gas was, " you do the same thing for some one else when you see them needing help." (Sorry for any misspelled words, I am very dyslexic and the spell check isn't working.)

I volunteer at the Ronald House. Wednesday night I went up there to help out, and there was a family that had checked in about a month ago. (A mother, father, two young girls) The mother and father wanted to go see the little boy that was in ICU for the last visit that night, but the girls could not go. And against policy rules I could not let the girls stay with me at the house with out a parent there, so I volunteered to take the girls to Chick-fil-a, feed them, let 'em play, then took them back to the Ronald house. Parents got to see the little boy and the girls had a good time, too. I believed it lifted their spirits.

I think that those of us who are addicted to this website are kind every day. When I get a "best answer" that says something like "5 stars, you really helped me. Thank you so much." Now that makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I did something kind , by helping a stranger with an answer I probably put a lot of thought into, it helped this stranger whom I'll never meet, and I'm not getting paid for it. We're all here out of the goodness of our hearts. (Well. almost all of us.) :)

I'm with the first answerer, barbara. I work in healthcare too and get so many grumpy people no matter how nicely I treat them. It's truly appreciated when someone thanks me for taking care of them. It's my pleasure, but it's just so nice to have it acknowledged instead of being yelled at.

As for myself, last Christmas I was at a McDonald's drive-thru and while waiting at the window I could see this lady at the counter who looked rather poor and seemed to be barely able to make change for her cup of coffee. I asked the person at the window for a $10 gift card and asked her to give it to the lady at the counter so she could enjoy a nice breakfast and then maybe another meal another time. :)

I was shopping at Staple's on my lunch break yesterday, and I brought back these cool personal hand sanitizers in designer colors that you can keep on your key chain, purse strap, or belt loop. I put one on each of my co-workers' desks. We're case managers in a mental health clinic. The work is grueling and we don't get a lot of perks... Everyone was surprised---and appreciative.

All the time-I work in healthcare. Amazing how many people think that because I get paid they don't need to show even common courtesy, much less say "Thank you". I've learned not to expect it :)

i took this lady home, her car broke down.
i was sitting with a friend at a restaurant, she came up and ask for assistance. this was not the first time her car broke down.
i was hesitant at first. i didn't want to end up in the obituary.
good thing the restuarant manager say he knew her.
