He was saying that there's no greater love than for a person to LAY down his life (or die) for his friend. I think it was a general statement and a logical one. Dying for someone else is the ultimate human sacrifice.
Which is also what HE did for us, as a sacrifice.
Have a great one.

Jesus was referencing His sacrificial death on the cross. Christians are called to exemplify Christ, and therefore "sacrificing" themselves for their friends. This does not just mean dying for someone...you can sacrifice yourself in many ways. Giving of your time, money, helping people out. This is what is meant by sacrificing.
Addition:
He laid down His life so they might be saved from their sins and escape the wrath of Hell.

you ask why would He do this for men that hated Him- because His love is stronger than hate. Jesus laid down His life, so people who did not love Him would come to know Him. He loved us before we loved Him. When Jesus came to earth and took our death, for our sins, upon Himself it was love that kept Him on the cross, not the nails- He could have saved Himself at anytime, He chose to die, so that we could choose to live!!

Jesus is speaking of what He would be doing for mankind. He layed down His life so we could have forgiveness for our sins and eternal life with Him in heaven.. Would you be willing to do the same?

greater love.. that's Jesus' kind of love. unconditional... never changing... remember, in the Bible, Jesus died to save mankind. that's the greatest kind of love.. and He never asked for anything in return. He considered us His friends not because we are distant.. but instead of calling us sinners, He loves us so much that He treats us like friends.

I think he was speaking of laying down his own life for us because he loves us so much. or it could be to treat others as you want to be treated. Love thy neighbors.

He was talking about Himself. And that's just what He did, He laid His life down for us, those who trust Him.
