A PLC is a Programmable Logic Controller. It is a microprocessor-based control system using a specially designed programming language. They were originally designed to replace relay control panels with a system that could be reprogrammed instead of being rewired when control needs changed. The original "language" for programming them was symbols used in a "ladder-logic" diagram.
