You really like this counselor and you are probably in the same decade as her regarding age. She wants to see a picture of you and your family.

Is that ok?? What do you think?

That's fine! Unless you are seeing her specifically for counselling about a disturbance in your family or something, it doesn't seem out of the ordinary.

I would think that would be a good tool for them. You can tell a lot about people's interactions by how they stand or sit in relation to each other. (Haven't you ever seen People magazine showing how couples stand together and what that says about their relationships?)

Things that might tell them about dynamics: If someone has to be front & center, if someone insists on hiding behind others, if someone continues to stand while others are seated comfortably, if one person consistently distances themselves. Oh our body language says a LOT!

(I would however start to feel uncomfortable if they started asking excessive questions about a sibling that seemed like they might be interested in a date instead of your well being!)

but I would give the benefit of the doubt on the side of a counselor having ethical reasons

No I don' think that it is OK. Your counselor is there to have an unbiased opinion and help you. There is no reason that they should even request to see a picture. Why does it matter what the people look like physically ? They should worry about helping you better understand these people and yourself, helping you with your problems.

Maybe the counsellor feels you may open up a bit more sharing that information, and having a visual of your family helps? It may be a way for you both to be more relaxed talking to each other. I wouldnt worry.

Perhaps she's interested in having you talk about the photo as a way to get you to tell her about your family...

She's a busy body. Don't show her the photo.
