I was sharpening my knife and when I finished and went to put fold it back in, I shoved it into m finger so it cut diagonally into my finger, so basically it's all skin that got ripped up and it's bleeding at the base of the slice.

I'm applying pressure and wrapped it in napkin tightly.

If it is more than skin deep you need it looked at as it may involved nerve or tendon damage.

Pressure and holding it up higher than your heart is helpful.
If you have been taking any non steroidal tablets (anti-inflammatories) such as brufen, ibuprofen, naprosyn you will take longer to stop bleeding. Some other meds also cause a prolonged clotting time (antidepressants, warfarin etc) so this might be why it is not happening as quickly as usual.

Watch out for signs and symtoms of infection later on: heat, pain, odour, nasty ooze, red streaking.

Good to hear you have bandaged it and keeping the pressure on you may also want to hold you hand up, ( elevated) so the blood drains away from the wound, this will minimise bleeding too. Do you still have movement in the finger? you may need stitches.

apply direct pressure and put a new dressing on top of the old one if it becomes soaked with blood. Do not remove the blood soaked bandage. If you can't get the bleeding to stop, get off Yahoo! Answers, and get to the hospital.

Elevate above the heart, and apply pressure. When bleeding stops, protect against infection with neosporin and badages.

u should think about possibly going to a doctor to see how bad it it is and if you may need stitches. Also, if u haven't allready, clean the cut with soap and water. Hope u do ok.

Bandage it with a medical bandage. If it continues to bleed, go to the ER-you may need stitches.

keep pressure on it and maybe add ice to constrict the blood vessels but, if it's deep and long or gaping you may need stitches
