UPDATE: I've done some research on this and here are my conclusions:

It doesn't have to be Dawn - any dish soap will do.

It doesn't actually kill the fleas because it doesn't contain pesticide - they simply drown. Having the soap in the water helps to keep them from hopping out.

As for whether to bathe or simply comb the cat with a soapy comb or brush - my guess is that if you're very very careful not to get any in the eyes or ears or mouth, it would be safe enough to bathe even a kitten in it (if you're brave enough!)

However, this is only going to kill adult fleas. You still need to treat the environment, or the larva will just hatch and jump back on your kitty.

It may wash them off, but it won't get rid of them. To get rid of fleas you need to treat the animal and the source plus the living area. Lots of work, since you need to do it again and again and also comb the "nits" out of the cat's fur. And guess what??? you can get them too! Vacuum a lot and use the vet-recommended chemicals.

no but dish soap also dries your dogs skin out really bad. id stick to the flea shampoo cuz it has a lil xtra moisture in it.
