Somethings should not be televised. This is one if them.

It's a sick world, and I'll bet you dollars to donuts that televised executions would make it worse, not better. First of all, a lot of these wackos, like these friendless kids who shoot up their schools, just want the attention. Televising executions would play right into their wishes. Remember, Timothy McVeigh begged for his execution to be televised. He wanted one last moment in the spotlight.
Furthermore, I think kids of my generation are already desensitized to violence by video games and television (including the nightly news) that we don't need to celebrate it by televising executions.
By the way, I am all for the death penalty. I think it is a more effective deterrent to crime than locking these guys up in what, frankly, amounts to a dorm room because they aren't in with the general population, and saves the States money compared to feeding them and giving them health care for 60-70 years.

This is an excellent question which I have debated with friends many times.
One friend always argued - "In the Old West (USA) they used to have public hangings. Folks came in from the farms, brought their kids, and sweet water and other goodies were sold to the crowd. It was a festive occasion. I'll bet the kids learned a lesson".
My father had an even more extreme view. He said that "when they catch a politician stealing from us they should take him to the capital steps and shoot him on national TV."
My opinion? The current method of execution is not gruesome enough to draw a big audience after the first one or two telecasts. Sponsors might be hard to get.
Maybe someone could create a website like some of those that now show videos about anything and everything?

Not no, but hell no. Why would anyone want to see something as gruesome as this? Witnessing a public execution could be very traumatic as if the witnesses had been under fire themselves. Even though I am against the death penalty, executions should they happen, needs to performed privately. Those who believe it should be done publicly needs to have their heads examined because I feel that only mentally insane or retarded people would enjoy such atrocious acts.

I believe in executions, but not on t.v. or internet. My father was hanged by some people (he was not a criminal it was murder). I found him and when they showed the stuff of Bin Ladin, my heart sunk. I believe that Ladin got what he deserved but there are too many people who have had their family member murder execution style and I don't mean just by guns shot.

Considering the cost of incarceration and the excessive cost of executing someone, I would propose the state set up executions on pay-per-view to offset the operating expenses.

No.
Nobody should celebrate a death, no matter how deserving the subject may seem. That said, there are definitely people that need to be removed from society, and the death penalty is appropriate in some cases.
Our society is sick. We're in love with violence and I fear that this is jeopardizing the value we place on human life.
Very young children grow up playing violent video games. Is it any wonder that school shootings are becoming more and more rampant? I'm not saying that violence on television and in video games will cause kids to shoot people, but it does bring down natural mental barriers.
In WWI, many commanders were having difficulty getting their men to actually pull the trigger on German soldiers. Somehow, with a man in their sights, they couldn't bring themselves to shoot. So the military changed the practice targets from a circular target to one shaped like a man. The instances of hesitation on the battlefield reduced sharply. Later on other methods were devised, and since the advent of FPS video games, those numbers have all but vanished.

Yes................. but it should be a 2 hour program that shows all the facts of the case and just what an evil SOB the defendant is. And then the last 10 minutes of the show is the execution.
I have no sympathy for the evil in the world. They deserve more than the death penalty.

slightly off thread...
when Utah executed Gary Mark Gilmore in 1977 by firing squad...people were calling the governor and volunteering
to be on the firing squad.
So- if public and/or on TV...yes, people would watch.
