I personally have not. I attended an Assembly of God church for a while where several did. In the back of my mind, I sort of didn't believe it was real. Other times, while the preacher was preaching someone in the congregation would stand and say they had a dream or vision or something the night before related to what the preacher was saying, so someone standing up and speaking in tongues wasn't unusual.

One Sunday during a sermon on bitterness (something I had and still have problems with) several people stood up during the sermon, one man who spoke in tongues, one woman about how she had been helped by scripture to overcome this, and a second woman who stood and told about a dream regarding a vine choking out a tree. Anyway, after the sermon, I was talking to several others in the congregation about what the woman's dream meant and how I thought it really "brought home the point"...They just looked at me, wide eyed, then looked at each other wide-eyed. FINALLY one of the women, turned to me and said, No, sister, we didn't understand what she was saying, she was speaking in tongues to us, and I said, No! I understood everything she said, and I explained in detail what she said. The woman took me aside and explained that what she said apparently was meant for my understanding, for others only heard tongues and I had heard and understood in my own language what was said. Talk about chill bumps. I spoke to the preacher about it and he confirmed it that she had in fact spoke in tongues from what he heard/understood. And he also confirmed that many times when someone stands and speaks, others do not understand but only hear tongues. I felt blessed for this, as if this message was from God through this woman.

I know it sounds weird, and I probably wouldn't believe it if someone told it to me before I actually experienced it, but I am telling you exactly what happened.

Did you know...
The bible actually says it is not to be done unless there is an interpreter present and then only when done in an orderly fashion -where one speaks at a time-so that everyone can hear the tongues and then the meaning of it?

The gift of tongues was given to help spread the word between people who didn't speak the same language?

yes. 1 Cor 14:2 "For anyone who speaks in tongues does not speak to men but to God. Indeed no one understands him, he utters mysteries with his spirit"†

1 Cor 14:4 "He who speaks in tongues, edifies himself, but he who prophesies, edifies the church".†

I also heard a paster teach on this one time, who explained that the reason it is in an unknown tongue, is not so that others won't understand, but it is in a language that demons cannot understand, in which the Holy Spiri† Himself prays through you, in times when we know not how to pray, the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us to the Father. It is the Lord Himself praying through us to the Father. Plus as the Scriptures say, "It edifies" the person who does it. How Awesome is THAT!!♫

It is a gift 1 Cor 12:28†

Daily!

***Actually, speaking in tongues (as a prayer language is VERY different as the GIFT of tongues)

The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4). The speaking in tongues in this instance is the same in essence as the gift of tongues (I Cor 12:4-10, 28), but different in purpose and use.

The Gift of Tongues is spoken out loud and with and Interpreter.
Praying in tongues is a perfect prayer between you and God.

I have not. I know people who have; very few people but ones who I know in my heart are very very sincere.
