Nathan, 10% of all human beings are gay, including all the closeted gay Mormons. (I know from experience)

I'm not sure if you're gay, or whatever, but here's my take on the whole situation. By the way, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

God has sanctioned sexual relations for marriage between a husband and a wife. That's all. That means that nobody should engage in sexual relations of any other kind, including homosexual.

But there is no double standard. Notice that this policy also says that heterosexual individuals who are not married to each other shouldn't have sex either.

I don't claim to know why certain people are attracted to people of the same sex. But they shouldn't act on those attractions. The world today makes it seem like it's a right or maybe even uncontrollable to have sex with whoever you want. But that is not true. Abstinence outside of marriage between a man and a woman is the best way to go, for everyone.

I personally feel very badly for those who struggle with same-sex attraction. Homophobia causes so much prejudice against people who are probably already confused and feel alone. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not for perfect people; if we were perfect we wouldn't need church. Therefore, there are likely to be some members of the Church who are homophobic. But God loves all His children, and I think it's safe to say the Church would very much like all people to come and partake of the wonderful blessings that come from following the commandments of Jesus Christ.

If you would like to investigate more of what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has to say on homosexuality, I encourage you to investigate articles in the church magazine Ensign. Back articles are available in a searchable database at this address:

I think you'll find a very loving attitude towards those who struggle with same-sex attraction.

During the last century, we have made great progress when it comes to acceptance and equal rights for women and people of all races. The next challenge our society faces is going through this process for people in same sex relationships. It won't happen overnight, but I think we are going in the right direction.

Unfortunately, acceptance by the Mormon church is probably something you will not see in your lifetime. Changes are slow and only happen under great social pressure. During my growing up years, blacks could not hold the priesthood. Women were putting their salvation in jeapordy if they limited the number of children they had (this was a direct quote from one of the prophets- kind of interesting that men's salvation was never mentioned!). Prophets preceding the current one weren't even born the 20th century!

Change comes in the Mormon church when current practice has to change, or consequences will be very negative or severe. Then, the prophet will have a relevation. Certainly, the end of polygamy and the admission of black males into the priesthood are good examples.

I am not gay and so I don't share your dilemma. But I find other practices in the Mormon church to be objectionable. I find that being true to myself and living according to my morals and values is necessary for my happiness. I hope that you can find your own sense of peace by living in a way that is right for you.
