Does the person put your needs before their own. Do they think of you. Do they do things just for you. That makes them good marriage material.

For a man to be ready for marriage, he should be:
a.) Be able to provide for his family (has a stable job, enough savings)
b.) Be mature enough to be a father to his children (that is assuming he can "bear" children).
c.) Mature enough to be a husband to his wife (loves the woman)
d.) A plus - if he comes from a good family, and is educated (this would be very important).
For a woman to be ready for marriage:
a.) she should at least know how to take care of her family (husband + children)
b.) Should not be afraid of bearing children
c.) A plus - if she knows how to cook and take care of the household
d.) Well today is the modern world, it would be a huge plus if she too has a stable job to contribute to the family's finances.
e.) As a probable mother, it would be very good if she is well-educated, so she can teach and rear her kids well.

Maturity, commitment to you and only you, willing to have children or at least be comfortable with children. Also honesty, caring, sweet. And respect for your parents. I think people that are marriage material will be responsible and able to show you without you having to guess if they are or not.

Acceptance of who you are, and respect for you. To me that respect extends to not cheating.
Someone who can take care of themselves but would rather take care of you (and the same goes for you-it's gotta work both ways).
Someone who can live happily on their own, but would prefer to be happy living with you (again, the same goes for you).
Someone with whom you share values, morals, interests, and goals in life.

It all depends on what you want. Sandra Bullock met a guy with a bunch of tatoos, and a long criminal history. She married him.
