I have a large dog (over 70 pounds) and I find that if I take him atleast twice a year to the groomer that is all he needs.
Then in between bathing I brush him 2-3 times a week.
Ours is a Chow/Huskey Mix and is not Kept outdoors.
Bathing a large dog can be very difficult and getting all the
shampoo out of their coat is a Must. If you cannot do that they can get dry dammaged skin from left over soap on their skin. It cost me around $25.00 for a bath twice a year and it's well worth it to have it done right.
He is also dried and brushed out after his bath. He loves to be brushed and pampered.

I have 3 labs, two are 90+ pounds. The biggest one used to hate baths and would fight me all the time. My husband bought an adapter that looks like the spray thing on the sink (the hose that pulls out of the counter with a spray nozzle on it) Anyway, I just hook that up to the shower head and get them (one at a time) in the shower. It's a walk in shower, not bathtub. He fought me with getting in the shower the first couple of times and I just enticed him in there with treats, and now he goes right in. Now mind you he still doesn't like baths but at least he can move around a little but I still have him closed in. And he's terrified of the hose (outside one) and stuff though. The other two are pretty good.
Just try to make him feel comfortable (as possible) and keep telling him good boy and stuff. He will eventually just give in.
Good luck

hehehehe - wanna bathe my 85# male great pyrenees???
I have some strap material that's like the stuff they make dog leashes out of. I got it at a GREAT fabric store in San Diego named UFO. I believe it's called webbing.
I have a cement slab below a deck where I put a large cow watering trough made by rubbermaid. I have hooks and D-rings on the strap. One end has a hook to clip to pepper's collar. I run the strap from his neck up through a ring I installed (like a pully) and then I run the strap down and around one hind leg, back up to the ring and then down around the other leg. It's like having a leash attached to his collar and another leash attached to each leg. It tells him I want total control, and is the ONLY way I can immobilize him for a really GOOD bath now that he's full grown and very strong.
I used to simply strongarm him into the watering trough as bath tub, but it was getting to be enough of a struggle that he wasn't getting a good enough bath that way. So I came up with the strap idea as I believe the pet shops use a leash to the collar to keep the dogs contained when you take them in for a bath.
He doesn't like the strap, but doesn't struggle against it as much as he struggles against my holding him by hand.

I have not tried this but the water in a bucket and a sponge I think might work, my husband usually ties or big dog's leash to the fence to aid in the dog not taking off on him

Do you have a do it yourself grooming salon in your town?
My dog was terrified of bath until i did it and he saw me using that big old loud nasty blowdryer. I was there to comfort him...i guess that helped him alot.
