Bill Elliott. 212.809 mph. I think the sponsor at the time was Coors..driving a Ford.
Shortly after that they started putting restritor plates on the cars, so the record most likely will stand forever...at least in Nascar.
I think a rival racing league will eventually evolve and the record could possibly be broken then..but until then. Awesome Bill owns it ;)

A world record of 221.160 was established at Talladega on August 9, 1975, by Mark Donohue. In 1987, Bill Elliott established a world stock car record when he posted a speed of 212.809 in qualifying for the Winston 500. Elliott also established a world record for a 500 mile race when he averaged an incredible 186.288 mph in winning Winston 500 in 1985. ...........and Donohue was sponsered by Penske and Porsche !!!

Yes Bill Elliot set the NASCAR speed record at Talladega, but the all time speed record was set by the late Mark Donohue the closed course speed record was 221.160 in a porsche 917-30,in 1975.
But all of us NASCAR fans know that Bill Elliott set the standard.

Awesome Bill from Dawsonville........Bill Elliott prior to the restrictor plate crap. I think he drove the Coors car and the speed was about 213. I think that the entire field that was set by speed that year was all in excess of 200 MPH. So the slowest car was faster than the faster today. Love to see the restrictor plates go, especially with the roof plates and the safer barriers

212.809 mph by bill elliott driving the coors thunderbird, owned by harry melling in 1987. he also ran 210 mph at daytona before they put resrtictor plates on the cars to "snuff" the horsepower. the reason for the plates was because of the horrible crash that bobby allison had when he went rolling down the fence at talladega!

While Bill Elliot set the record in race, Rusty Wallace holds the track record. He ran unrestricted to test audio epuipment for Nascar, he ran an average of around 223. It was just a couple of years ago his sponsor was Miller Lite.
