I'm a member of the LDS church and I agree that there is a lot of negativity surrounding it. A lot of the negativity is simply untrue. For example, we do eat chocolate and we can drink soda. =)
We do believe in the Jesus Christ of the Old and New Testament. We believe in Jesus Christ who is the Son of God and the Savior of Mankind. We are Christian.
Joining the Mormon Church is a commitment. We aren't simply a Sunday religion. Members of the church commit to God to live the best lives that we can. We agree to love and serve one another and to try and emulate Jesus Christ in all things that we do.
I don't have answers for all of the questions that people have about Mormons, but I do know that my religion brings me peace and brings me happiness. I live my life confident that there is a God and that He knows who I am. I leave my house every morning knowing that I am loved and that God is watching over me. I love that my religion encourages me to learn about Jesus Christ and try to be like him. And I love that my religion doesn't encourage blind obedience-we are encouraged to pray and ask God to help us know what is true.
Mormons aren't perfect, but I enjoy the feeling of community that I have in my faith. I travel a lot and I love the security of knowing that if I have any problems (such as when my car broke down in the middle of nowhere), I can contact members of my faith and they will help me out. I've had this happen before. It's a wonderful feeling.
I wish you luck in your search. I hope you find what you are looking for.

I don't know who told you the "no sodas" thing. I'm practicing LDS and active and I have a Mt. Dew on my desk as we speak. I gave up coffee recently so I could live the Word of Wisdom completely.
You will find that it is not a "chore" to attend church being LDS. I personally look forward to attending my meetings and learning. But prayer is the best medicine for the soul! Know that your Heavenly Father loves you and hears and answers ALL sincere prayers.
I was born into an LDS family and then became inactive as a teenager. I've only been active again for about 3 years. I had to come to the truth of the gospel for myself. I never realized how much better of a person I could be by attending all my meetings. I want to do better so I can live in the presence of my Heavenly Father once again.
Below are a couple of good websites to help you out. Also, I'm starring your question so some of my other LDS friends will see it and answer as well.
EDIT: The LDS Church does NOT own Pepsi or Coke or any of the others that may be listed. I've heard that the Church owns both. But what these people do not realize is that both are publicly traded companies that many members of the church may own stock in. But the Church itself does NOT own them. Good one, SonofEatonWright...I needed a good laugh this morning.

If you become a Mormon you will become a, "church goer" and a great deal more. The benefits will justify a great deal more than 5 years of seeking. There is not a better choice for you and your family.
I recommend viewing some of the videos at http://www.mormon.org
This is an official Church site designed for people interested in finding out more about the Church. It makes it easy to answer questions such as the one about tea and soda.
There are certainly those who find fault with the LDS Church. Noting their unchristian-like behavior can help you decide how much credibility to give their words.

You have to find your own place in life, but if you confusion is based on things that people have told you, you need to take those concerns to the Lord and ask Him if it is right. He will never tell you something that isn't true, or that will confuse you.
It really is up to you, and I think that finding your place in life is very important, no matter what religion you choose. You need to believe in that religion. If your whole heart isn't in it, then maybe it isn't the one for you. It doesn't matter what someone else says, or believes. All that matters is what is in your heart.
Pray, read, learn and study what you need to to find the answers you need. No one else but you and God can make that decision.
Just so you are aware- we can drink soda's and eat chocolate!! Just not coffee and tea. Most herbal teas are fine, but that is something that is your decision to follow.
The members of the LDS church are very active in their religion. We believe in living what our religion says, so it isn't for someone who just wants to go to church on sundays and not do anything else the rest of the week. I can say that since I've been really following what the church believes, I have been healthier, happier and more in tune with God and Christ then I have ever been!
I may have been born into the church, but didn't always follow it. I had to be converted too, and that took time, and searching, and praying, and reading and... well, may things. My beliefs didn't happen all at once, it happened a little at a time.
Start reading your scriptures, and asking God to help you understand things. Take what you don't understand to Him and have Him help you to understand them better, or give you confirmation that what you think is right. No matter what you decide, God will never abandon you!!
If you decide that the church isn't for you, then that's fine, and you have made that decision based on what is best for you, but you also have to remember that Satan works his hardest when we know something is right, or when a decision we are about to make is right for us. He will try whatever he can to get you to not believe certain things. It's his way, and always will be. So take that confusion and put it where it belongs, back on him!
Good luck!! I hope you find your place in life, no matter where that journey leads you!!!

Hey I'm a Mormon Missionary and if you would like we could talk about what it means to join us. I can promise you though that it is not just a Sunday religion, you will be actively involved and be helping to invite others to grow spiritually. Message me if you would like.

First, let me just say to you, confusion is a tool satan uses to lead God's children from the truth, he is the one who plants doubts, fear and misconceptions in the minds and hearts of those who are seeking the truth.
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I know for a fact, for myself, this is the only true and complete church and gospel on the face of the earth. There are many religions, if not all of them, who hold some truths and some aspects of the full gospel, but no religion has the complete gospel as the LDS does. It has been restored for our day, we are in the last dispensation and the fulness of times. Satan knows this and he will do anything and everything he can to tempt, confuse and mislead us away from this wonderful religion, for he knows where it will lead us and he doesn't want that.
Search your heart, ponder the scriptures, pray to your Heavenly Father if the gospel is true. He will not lead you astray...but be mindful, He will never cause you to be confused, if you are faithful, He will cause your heart to "burn" and your mind to be opened to understanding you may have never known before.
I love the church, I love the gospel, I love my Heavenly Father and my Savior. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

the mormon religion is an evil mockery of Christianity.
their doctrine states that God is not eternal, but has a father of his own, and was a man on another planet.
Christianity is family oriented, mormonism is control oriented.
joseph smith was a liar, a bigot, a woman-abuser, a pedophile (many of his [at least] 33 wives were under 15), and a false prophet.
how can mormonism be true if there is no historical evidence to support the existance of an highly advanced pre-columbian north american civilization?
are blacks allowed into temple yet? they used to be descendants of cain, right?
coffee and tea? you are forbidden to drink two natural substances, that both have health benefits, but soda is ok? that makes sense.
mormons believe that Jesus and satan are BROTHERS.
when elohim was about to populate earth, satan wanted to force all of us to worship God, but Jesus said let us decide for ourselves (decide for yourself--doesn't sound very mormon to me) and elohim chose Jesus' idea.
do they still electro-shock homosexuals while forcing them to watch gay porn at byu?

Read the Book of Mormon, then follow Moroni 10:3-7. If you can believe that this is the Word of God just like the Bible, another testament of Jesus Christ, and if you can beleive that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God, and that we have a living prophet today, then nothing else is going to matter, it will all be answered.
BTW, just coffee and tea, we are allowed to drink sodas.

Seriously pray to God and ask Him to lead you to His truth. Don't just bounce into something because "you're thinking about becoming something". Seek His truth. His Word, the Bible is a good place to start.
