If you want to try white wine, try Sauvignon Blanc. They are a bit sweet, fruity, and light. Not oaky (which is a real word) or dry like Chardonnay. Try Hogue Suavignon Blanc ($10) or Chateau St. Michelle Sauvignon Blanc ($12).

As for red, if you want non-dry, non-oaky wine, Pinot Noir is probably the best choice for you. Pinot Noir tends to be fruity in both smell and taste, light to medium in body, and not oaky. If you really want a good Pinot Noir, you need to pick the ones from California - Napa, Sonoma, or Central Valley/Paso Roble, or from Oregon.

Unfortunately, to get the really good wine, you need to expect to spend at least $30-40 per bottle. I used to call Pinot Noir "Watered down Merlot", and I still call the cheap Pinot Noir by that name. More expensive Pinot Noir, on the other hand, are much better, with good complexity and great flavor. For mid price range, try Benton Lane ($20), Foley ($25), Siduri (cheap one, $25), and Robert Mondavi ($25). If you like these, then definitely try something more expensive such as Hartfort Court ($45), Breaux Freres ($45 cheap, $75 single vineyard), Pennar Ashe ($45-55). You will not be disappointed if you acquire the taste of Pinot Noir.

Yellow Tail. It's about 12 bucks a bottle - but not a cheap wine at all. My favorite is the Shiraz. Perfect for an evening on the front porch!

They have all the most common types (Shiraz, Merlot, etc) so you will probably find something you would like.

My wife and I love Beringer White Merlot. It's a nice smooth sweet wine. Then for a white wine they make the White Zinfandel. Very good as well. They're also cheap. MMM, wish I had some now. Well, enjoy!

All of these answers suck (except about Chile and Australia - right on there). Yellow Tail is piss. Three words: Pillar Box Red. Its like 10-12 bucks and is awesome - easily a 90 point wine. Try BevMo or any reasonable wine shop.

Look at Australian or Chilean wines. Most are good values. I would get more specific but I do not know what you like. Australia is known for Shiraz (Yellow Tail is a popular brand). Merlots in Chile or whites, too.

i'm no longer great on white wines, greater of a pink drinker so the two I advise are the two reds. Carol Rossi makes an extremely candy low priced line of wines, the Blush and additionally the Sangria are incredibly reliable. pink wine is oftentimes served room temp, yet once you relax it it tastes sweeter. Have a satisfied new years!

I love, love, love the wines by Bogle. Both the Chardonnay and the Cab are great and are pretty moderately priced ($8 - $10 a bottle). Enjoy! :)
