There is no pure evil. Evil is a judgement by people about other things. Different people have different opinions about things. There is no substance or characteristic of "evil" that you can distill into a "pure" form.
And caring for only yourself is not necessarily bad. A hermit who never interacts with people, for example, does fairly well in thinking only of himself. However, in society, being too self-centered can make it much harder to associate with others. Going it alone is much more difficult than working with others. That's why evolution has honed our group instinct. It helps us survive better.
BTW, gods, spirits, and such are just superstition.
