Valium doesn't numb pain or prevent it, it just is a relaxer.
If you are stressed about getting shots it's a good idea to
take valium first then get the shot, you will be relaxed so you
won't care. Then when the shot kicks in, you won't feel pain.

Valium is used to relax you and not to anesthetize (get you numb). Dentists use valium or other sedatives to help you relax and not think about the procedure too much. Once you are in the office, they will put some gel on your gum, then give you an injection (very thin needle) which will get the area numb. The nice thing about valium is that even though you are going thru the whole thing, you don't really care.

The valium will calm you, not prevent pain. They will do shots to really numb your mouth before doing the filling. You will feel pressure, but no pain.
Good luck!

She's right. The dentist will give you a local anaesthetic to stop you from feeling pain during the drilling. Valium will help you to relax during the procedure. If you are concerned about the drug, please talk to the dentist before you get the fillings. He/she will explain it to you.
