An APBT is the greatest family dog there is. They love everyone and are really great with children. Mine is 65 lbs. If you get a puppy and let it grow around the kids they will love it and it will love them. My Pit has laid on the floor next to my baby grandson for hours.
A Beagle is a great dog. Pretty energetic and needs to be walked. They are usually between 20 to 30 lbs. Mine is a freak of nature and grew to about 40 lbs. He is easy going and loves everyone. He is not a noisy dog. He is the last one of my dogs to bark at anything. But if he gets into following the other dogs lead you will hear that howl.
Another great mellow dog is the Old English Sheepdog. They get a bit large. The one I had was 90 lbs. He was a gentle giant. Really laid back. He was a real clown always doing something funny. They do take a bit of grooming.
With whatever kind of dog you get I would suggest getting a puppy so your children can watch it grow. That way they will not be afraid of it no matter how big it gets.

Try a golden retriever. They are rather calm and really good with kids. However, they have really long hair that needs care. A black labrador is more active, but not super-hyper. They are sort of big dogs, but not so much as a Saint Bernard. A black labrador has shorter hair that only needs to be lightly brushed. They are also very good with kids. Let your kids know that when a dog put their paws on their chests and stands up, that's only so they'll be the same height as your child. Those dogs may be a bit more trying, as they like to run around a bit. But this would be good excercise for your children too. I hope this helps. I know these may not fit the ticket, but at least I tried.

No, don't get a boxer. They are big and hyper! If your kids are afraid of dogs, they will hate a boxer. Australian sheperds and collies as mentioned before are herding dogs. They are known to nip while trying to herd children, and are also very energetic. Do NOT go with a working class breed. Even beagles, labs, and bassets are VERY energetic. Your best be would be a companion dog, a maltese, poodle, shitzu, pug, something along those lines.
I have a cocker spaniel who is super sweet, calm, and playful when you want her to be. She is 8 months old, we got her when she was 4 months old. She's great with our 2 year old and 1 year old, and rarely barks. (Only when someone she doesn't know comes in our yard). She is also the cutest thing ever.

chocolate lab (the english type of labrador retrievers... not the "american field lab type" which are the slim and tall ones) English labs are the shorter, fatter ones. They are easy to train, calm, Loving, loyal, friendly with other dogs and kids. Labs are the most popular dog in America for many reasons>> and being good with kids is at the top of that! A half hour walk a day and the odd swim will keep your lab more than happy. Mine never barks because we pretended from the start that we couldn't hear him barking or whining, so he never tried again after like 1 week! I love my dog soooooo much.. Best of Luck!

Basset hounds are excellent dogs! They are pretty large though-and they need training to curb the "woo-woo-wooooo" baying behavior.
They are such sweeties. My dad had one as a kid, and my brother's girlfriend for over tow years has one. They are runners though, and need a good, solid fence.
My dad's basset got out of the yard, ran 15 miles (!!!) and into a chicken farm, where he killed 150 chickens. The farmer called the number on the tag and returned him, but they need good fences, and they wouldn't hurt a child.

I just got a YorkiePoo and it sounds like it might be your best bet if you don't want a larger dog (which some say have more patience w/kids). They are smart dogs that have great qualities from both the Yorkshire terrier and the Toy/Mini Poodle. They like to play, but they are not usually extremely hyper, and are easier to train than a lot of dogs. Personally, mine doesn't yap a lot and I've not heard complaints from any other owners. The price on these depend on where you live and from who you buy them.

A yorkie poo or a yorkie maltese!! Super low key, great with the kids, willing to get up and play when the kids want to play and loves to nap when the kids are relaxing. Doesnt generally bark unless hurt. Doesnt bite, unless light play bites. A great family dog! You will fall in love!

I have had dogs all my life. My best advice is go to your local shelter and save a mutt! Mixed breeds seem to be more stable. Dont get a golden retriever! They are sweethearts, but very very hyper. Lhapso apso mix is a nice dog.

I highly recommend a Pug. My pug is great around kids, adults, babies and other animals (big or small). She doesn't really bark, doesn't need a lot of exercise or room and is a great companion. The only drawback is that she sheds A LOT. Best of luck!
