The chance you were actually abused by a police officer is so slim that your chances of geting through court are laughable. But to answer your question, just go to the phone book and look for criminal lawyers.

Before you do so, look at the full set of circumstances that occured for the "abuse" to take place. Police are trained to respond in certain ways to how ignorant people set up the circumstances. When an officer says to do something, DO IT! If you think that the Officer is telling you to do something that is illegal, then suck it up for the moment, then after you are out of the situation contact the police department and ask if it was illegal. If you tell a cop to "F off" when you are told to do something, you have not only committed a crime but have made the officer's job harder.

If you are looking for a lawyer, you want one with a history of civil rights litigation. The big quesion is, what do you mean by police brutality or abuse?

Brutality implies that they used unlawful or excessive physical force. For example, that they jumped on you and dogpiled you just because you were verbally disrespectful. This would be an example of brutality.

Abuse is a much broader term. This can be anything from unprofessional conduct, such as cursing out a little old lady for misdialling 911, to officers accepting gratuities, which is against many agencies' policies.

Your first step, should be to contact the local police administration. Almost every agency has a Professional Standards Bureau, whose job it is to investigate complaints against officers. Believe me, they aren't in the business of "covering up" for officers' wrongdoings.

If this does not work, you can also contact the Dept. of Justice, who investigates civil rights violations. Follow the link below for their information.
