If you think of it this way, a dog know where to go to do its business (after being house trained of course), it knows where its food bowl is. It know who to be loyal to i.e its owner, if it gets out of the yard and goes running up and down the streets, it knows how to get back home, most of the time cats do too. The only difference with cats is, they look at us as the pet, they are the owners as they see themselves as owning us.

Now if that is not some level of intelligence, then I don't know what is.

I think cats and dogs for that matter are very intelligent. I mean I have a friend who was on David Letterman with his Dog who does Math...look up Dave the Math Dog online to read more about him. I see animals all the time who see a can and know what it is even before you open it. My cat sees me and looks at me with his food and no matter where I keep it or where I get it he knows when the can is his. He also goes to the door to be let outside. He will meow to come in and meow to go back out. These meows are different than his I am hungry or I want attention meows. So yes I do think they think and I also believe they can be very intelligent. Have a great day.

Yes they do

Dogs even dream . you can catch them sometimes
legs thrashing and making noises while they sleep

Cats will actually study things and figure things out
Like finding a way into a basement or
getting to something out of the way

A couple examples from about 30-35 years ago for me

I had a cat his name was Panda he was half Bobcat
from NY state. We moved to Calif and took him with us.
He figured out how to climb up a sandstone cliff
about 600 feet and sit and wait for a redwing hawk
that flew thru our property everyday.
When the Hawk came swooping down thru our property
PANDA lept off the cliff and onto his back and rode the hawk
all the way to the ground
I was amazed he didn't kill himself in the process it was
awesome to watch though he sat and waited for hours

Now do you think that was Instinct? Or a thought out plan?

Second example this was witnessed by several people
and the emotion of the experiance was overwhelming.

I had a Dog Black Lab named Pepper and he sired a son
we called FINKY because the son would tell on the other
puppies when they were doing something wrong. We kept him from the litter of 9.
One day my brother and myself were headed to the store
with both dogs coming along for the walk.
Suddenly we heard squeeling tires and loud sounds
coming from up the road we couldnt see anything yet
it was a small hill.
Pepper, the father, had wandered out into the first lane
same side of the road as we were walking on.
Finky looked me right in the eyes with an expression
that seemed to say BYE BYE he looked sad but determined
then in a flash he ran right at Pepper hit him square in the shoulder Knocking him accross the road and leaving himself
laying in the road as a car ran right over him.

His act was one of sacrifice for the life of his father
and to spare me or my brother from running into danger

that was the smartest dog I ever knew he was almost human

I do believe dogs can think.

I've got two dogs, a male and a female. Sometimes the male will have a toy or something that the female wants. She'll go to the window and start barking at nothing. When the male runs to the window to see what she's barking at (dropping the toy in the process) she'll run back and pick up the toy.

Yes, dogs think. I have been raised around dogs & many animals & have spent infinite hours watching their interactions & behavior. They don't 'think' or reason on the same level as people, but they do have their own unique 'concious' process. They also feel & express many of the same emotions as we do. Also, dogs, cats & many others, dream. Dreaming is thought to help the brain 'sort through' the thoughts/experiences/emotions of the individual during sleep. So, I think that since dogs dream, have feelings, etc that they also 'think'. Just my opinion :)

my dog.met this friend of mine .Once. about six years later i had moved to Alabama for a while and he came to visit. i lived way back off the road.when anyone even turned around in my driveway. Dawg would bark, when my friend turned in he started wagging his tail.he had only met him once.
someone took him off to be mean. to another state probably. he found his way home. thin and worn out. taking him three months to walk back home.
he was so smart my brother offered me a thousand dollars for him.he had plenty of common and extraordinary sense.he saved my life when a man pointed a pistol at me. he about tore that mans arm off. blood everywhere.
if he didn't like someone who came to my home. i didn't let them back to my home.he knew when someone was a bad person instinctively.
their were a few people he wouldn't let walk by the house on the street.my neighbour said he ran a man up the fence across from my home and he wouldn't let him down for like two hours,i still miss Dawg after twenty years now

Dogs do think and they make decisions. They may not think the way we do, but they have emotions like happy, sad, flight or fight. When your dog sees you, he wags his tail. This means that he thought. He recognized you, which takes thought- he is happy to see you if he wags his tail. If he runs, he thought to be scared or afraid. When your dog does something bad, like go in the wrong place, he seems embarrased and puts his tail between his legs.

I believe they think, I know this might sound a little corny to some, but we have 3 dogs, Diamond, Destinee and Fluffy (our little one). Diamond is a pitbull, but shes pretty smart if u ask me. She has this weak sissy sounding bark when shes trying to tell us something. My husband and i refer to it as "Diamonds tattling again". This past weekend they were all playing in the kitchen when we heard the tattle, so like we always do, we got up to go see what was going we figured it would be the usual, one of the other dogs playing with her rope or something, NOPE, we walked into the kitchen and shes standing in front of the table watching Fluffy on top of the table eating a breakfast taco wrapped in foil paper my son had left on the table. We got him off the table, he got a lil scolding and off to play she went, so yeah i believe they think. She had to think what he was doing was wrong cuz she knows our table is off limits to them. I dunno what do you think?

Not a much as humans do.

The thing with humans, is that we think of concepts since we have a language and can spread bigger ideas, as no other animals do.

All animals can think about is food, shelter, and sex. Unless they are living for altruistic purposes, whatever it may be for that species survival.

Actually they might not think about it because they dont just want it. They need it.

But really anything is possible because of chaos theory. They could be thinking to themselves and us not know it.

Animals do not have cognitive thoughts. They don't think about eating, they just do it because they are hungry. They don't "think" about anything, they just do it. Some dogs recognize different commands and situations becasue they are conditioned to respond in a certain way. They don't think about it, they just do it and get their reward. Again, food plays a part.
