Because they believed the Earth to be flat...when you stand on a high point and you look as far as you can see 360 degrees the Earth looks like a circle
a flat circle
edit: talliemay actually in the original Hebrew Isaiah used the word "chuwg" meaning circle. If he had meant sphere he would have used the word "duwr" meaning sphere, or ball

The Bible of course teaches the correct shape of the earth. Isaiah 40:22 says God sits above 'the circle of the earth' (the Hebrew word for 'circle' can also mean a 'sphere'). Also, Luke 17:34-36 depicts Christ's Second Coming as happening while some are asleep at night and others are working at day-time activities in the field-an indication of a rotating earth with day and night at the same time.

I'm amazed at the ignorance and prejudice of the respondents.
The deceivers seem to have the masses thoroughly brainwashed.
The Bible clearly describes the earth as a sphere in space:
"He stretches out the north over empty space
And hangs the earth on nothing. '
Job 26:7
Written hundreds of years before any such concept of the nature of the earth was discovered by scientists.

Isaiah describes the earth as a sphere. Isaiah did not describe the earth as a flat circle.
Did you know the bible also describes the water cycle perfectly?
Science always seems to confirm what was already written in the bible.

if they didn't have a word for sphere, why couldn't they just say 'like unto an orange' or something similar? instead, we get circles and tents and resting on pillars... not very evocative of a sphere if you ask me.
I'm amazed at the believers reading their pre-existing beliefs into the text, which is ambiguous at best.
