and please dont tell me "bread that's a day old"

i need it for a recipe, so serious answers please

It is bread that is not so fresh anymore. The term I would think comes from the fact that people used to actually go to bakeries to get their bread and you wanted bread baked that day but you could get specials on day old.
If you simple need stale bread, take out as many pieces as you need and let them sit for an hour or so, they will quickly start getting hard.

I most often use it for french bread since you don't want the bread to soak up the mixture, but to simply coat the break

Bread that has lost some of its moisture content that is used in many recipes like bread pudding, tomato pudding, etc. that calls for a firmer bread. French bread or a European bread can usually be substituted.

I'm not sure if I'm right since I'm not much of a cook, but I remember reading that day old bread is bread that is safe to eat but it's slightly past the expiration date.

It is bread that is slightly stale, literally a day or two old. Not rock hard but it has lost some of its moisture.

Bread that is slightly stale or "not freshly baked". Used often for making bread puddings etc because it's a bit more strudy

that is the serious answer. its bread discounted by the bakery because it was made yesterday. in a recipe, what they are looking for it bread that is firmer than fresh bread would be.
