photomosaic. And I've never seen one painted, they are all photographs. Though as long as you would digitize a painting you could add it to the database of images the algorithm is looking through.

I have never read or heard it call any name.
Maybe PiP would be a good term? :-)
It is not pointillism. That is just a painting made out of dots. The dots are just dots.

search for chuck close. I know he did pointalism. My teacher made of do this class, it was hard. But it was experience.
