We are adopting a cat from the local animal shelter. He/She will be strictly indoors. If you were putting together a complete shopping list for new cat supplies what would you include? What could your cat not live without and what was a complete waste of money? Please include brands and website links if you have them.
Thanks - I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!!

Scratching post (do not put it in a quite corner put it somewhere you hang out- then the cat will use it and not the furniture you hang out on) 2 sets of food dishes (some cats are allergic to plastic but its a fine way to start) a safety collar &/or micro-chip (just in case) food. Several kinds of toys- my cats likes toys on sticks, balls and things he can carry around in his mouth but he doesn't like catnip. Cat box and litter- get the right size for your cat. Soft cat brush and nail trimmers. Oh, I recommend a cat piller- hopefully you won't have to use it but if you ever need to pill your cat you will be happy you have it.
I totally wasted money on catnip in every form. I did get a great scratching post that is drift wood and carpeted- it wasn't cheap but we both love it- I was told he was a furniture scratcher but he never has with his post next to the living room couch, he uses both the carpeted part and the drift wood to scratch-on. My cat has every toy I come across and frankly his favorites have pretty much stayed the same. I have finally learned to stick with his preferrences not what I think is clever.
I hope this helps.

My cats' favorite toys are cardboard boxes and paper shopping bags. Just be sure they're clean, and cut the handles off the bags so that the kitty doesn't get tangled up in them. One of my cats also loves chasing the light from a laser pointer (the others couldn't care less about it), but you have to be very careful to never shine the light into the cat's eyes, and I personally think that too much of this activity makes cats neurotic, so I seriously limit that kind of fun.

Make sure you buy scoopable cat litter! Some good cat food, toys, and maybe somewhere to sleep/hide. Depending on if the cat is declawed, some nail clippers are a must! I just recently adopted a kitty and her nails are horrible, and she is always clawing at everything, so I clip her nails with kitty nail clippers. So maybe a scratching post too!

I reccomend Fresh step crystals for litter i was a little weary at first but aftery trying it i loved it there was zero odor and i did not have to change the litter for almost a month just scooped out the poopies and stired it around once a day its good stuff , a scratching post is a must , I also reccomend soft paws little silicone caps for the cats claws they have saved my children form many scratches and saved my sofa, a few cat toys but if it is anything like mine he plays with everything but his toys. a cat tunnel is a good thing too

At least 2 really big roomy litter boxes, unscented scoopable litter, water bowl, food bowl, a bunch of toys, a scratching post or two, some cat beds to hide in, a brush, a pair of nail clippers, a litter scoop. That should get you off to a good start. Oh, don't forget a really good premium or name brand diet! :) ....and treats!
