I have a very old shitzu who only goes outside to use the bathroom but still he manages to get fleas. I don't want to use Frontline or any medicine like that because he is an old dog and that could be dangerous. I give him a bath everyday, bomb the house, wash our sheets daily but still they return. Does anyone know any homeopathic remedy or maybe something your granny used to kill the fleas? I can't take much more of this and I know he can't.

When you are giving him a bath, you need to soak him for 20 to 30 minutes in soapy water to kill the fleas and eggs. Lather him up really good and leave him lathered in the sink or tub. The fleas will die as they cannot swim. You can also try sprinkling garlic on their food. This is an old remedy I have heard and my dogs do not get fleas. Good luck!

Unless you are using something on him to kill the adult fleas, which only live on the pet, you will never get rid of them. The eggs fall off the pet and hatch out in the environment. There could be thousands in your house! Bathing him will not stop the infestation, and you'll only dry his skin out. Frontline and Advantage short circuit only the FLEA nervous system, they have no effect on dogs and cats. They do not get absorbed into the bloodstream, so they are very very safe and nontoxic. I use them monthly on my elderly dogs (one is a Shih Tzu, too). I've been a Tech for over 20 years and have first hand knowledge of these products (contact with manufacturer, vet schools, specialists, etc)--if they were not safe I would be the first to tell you so and I would certainly not use them on my pets and would not recommend them.

I find it very respectable that you are looking out for the health of your dog, but you should know that Frontline and similar prescription products are very safe for dogs of all ages :). That is really the best way that you can get it under control...homeopathic remedies just tend to be much (if at all) less effective. I've worked at a vet clinic for several years and we have yet to see ANY reactions to Frontline from any dogs ages 8 weeks to 19 years. I would also recommend flea bombing your house (I know, no fun!!!) to try to kill the buggers that have set themselves up inside. Good luck!

You obviously need to rid your house of fleas as well as get them off of your pet. This may sound weird, but it worked for me.

Fleas, like most insects, are attracted to light. So, take a kitchen plate and put some water in it with dish soap. Place the plate in the middle of your living room, family room, etc floor. Place a gooseneck lamp over the plate (I put a pillow on the floor and simply layed a lamp on it with the lampshade off). Turn the lamp on. Turn all other lights out. Before you know it, the fleas will be jumping at the light, landing in the water, and unable to jump out.

Sounds weird. The first night we drowned 11 of the buggers.

Don't bathe him daily- it's bad for his skin. Talk to the vet- he must have SOME idea.
