Apologists sounds so wussy. And it's like they are saying sorry for the entire Mormonism thing (which is what they should be doing). I know that the definition of Apologist is "defender of something blah blah".. but the first thing you think of when you hear apologist is "I'm sorry".

Mormon 'apologists' are tasked with taking the 19th century dogma, science and other odd comments of the brethren and placing a contemporary spin on them: Limited geography of the Book of Mormon, implied inspiration of the papyri, 'opinion' replacing doctrine as convenient to name a few.

However, they walk a fine line between doctrine and heresy, first trying to please Salt Lake, and trying to make the science 'fit'.

There were Christian Apologists for 1800 years before the Mormons ever got started. The term comes from the Greek word apologia, which means to "defend a position against attack".

Justin Martyr
Tatian
Irenaeus
Tertullian
Jerome
Thomas Aquinas...

were all Christian Apologists....

But given the modern definition of the word, it is rather ironic. Because apologists do nothing but make up absurd rationalizations for things that can't otherwise be explained logically. So it is a little like saying "I'm sorry..." LOL.

I'm not knowledgeable about Mormons but you should know that the word "apologist" does not imply an "apology". Look it up.

"Apologist" is a term used by those in many venues, not just some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...

I am not a fan of that term either -- it does sound wussy.

They are not official defenders of the church and by definition what they say may not be exactly correct.

Frankly I ignore them -- they may be gr8 -- but I don't know

Some say it is because they are a sorry lot.

I wouldn't say that. Or WOULD I?
