I was watching them today at WalMart and I was astounded at how many of them lick their fingers to get a better grasp on the plastic bag to open them. For some reason, I just found this quite distrubing. Is this just me, or does anyone else feel this is just not quite healthy?

There is no sponge at Walmart, Kroger, or any other chain store, for the cashier or bagger to wet their finger on. The ONLY way it's "unhealthy" for you is if you're a pig and don't wash your hands.
FYI, grocery workers are NOT "nasty" or "dirty". That's just stupid. If you really believed that why would you be a moron and shop in a store you thought had dirty employees?

Consider this... Their hands are ALL OVER your food, dummy, that bag is the LEAST of your worries.

unless you are a germafobe you shouldnt worry. that is why they make hand sanitizer: for people who get grossed out easy, it isnt like they are wiping their butt with the bag, or licking the whole thing, wash your hands and quit freaking about it. until walmart changes their policy on bags being licked there is nothing you can do. besides it isnt like they touch the handles first it is the middle part of the bag their spit ends up on the most, no big deal unless you carry your bags by the middle and not the handle.

People often lick their fingers to separate things like papers, bags, etc. Sure, a few spit germs get on there, but most germs have surprisingly short lives. I'm pretty sure you didn't get sick when your third-grade teacher did it with your homework assignments, so I doubt that anything bad is going to happen at Wal-Mart either. I worry about germs a lot but sometimes it's just not worth the effort.

It doesn't bug me; I just figure the outsides of food packages are not necessarily clean. For all I know the person putting them in the shipping box or onto the shelf went to the bathroom or picked their nose and didn't was their hands. The people in the checkouts are under pressure to work fast, and those plastic bags can be fiddly.

You know what I've noticed that. I understand if it was a paper bag (it's still disgusting) but you know that's kind of normal. But with a plastic bag, why would they need to, the material is already slippery. It also isn't healthy for the person that's licking their finger,..ewww lol like really, they've touched so many germ invested things in that grocery store...and passing it along to the customer! Wooow.

honestly.. get some hand sanitizer and carry it in your pocket.. as gross as it may seem to you have you ever thought about everything else you touch?? the cart handles the hangers even the money you exchange is loaded with far worse things than the spit of your bagger..how many guys do you think have skipped washing their hands and then bought somethng with the money you just got as change? money is dropped thrown away and has stuff spilt on it.. My guess. It's easier to open the bags i'm assuming and i bet if you had to wait your question would be.."why does it take 20 minutes for the bagger to open the shopping bags?"

Most stores have received enough complaints about that issue that cashiers are given a damp sponge to moisten their fingers when needed.

For book reading, TackyFinger or a similar product works better than saliva and doesn't wear off as fast. You just want to make sure nobody else uses the same container as yours so your wax doesn't become a petri dish for e. coli or something like that.

On the other hand, I remember 30 years ago when everyone wasn't so obsessed about germs - cleanliness yes, but not blown out of proportion like I think it's become. And we survived to make it to today...

No, they should lick the customers' fingers and let the customers open the bags. Why don't you suggest it to the Walmart President? I am sure they have never noticed it.

I think it's just you. Not only have I not ever really payed attention, I don't think I'd care if they did. You grab the handles, not the top of the opening where they grab to open it. Besides, I think most places any more have a damp sponge so people don't have to lick it.

Seriously though, it's just a little spit. It's not like they're hawking lugies all over the handles or anything.

I think they shouldn't do it, but I also think that those are slippery little devils and sometimes people forget themselves. Unless they have something really virulent and you have a crappy immune system, you're unlikely to get anything worse than a cold off of them, though. And, if they do have a cold, you've probably been exposed to it just from them touching your stuff. While it is gross, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
