Will PAL DVDs work with my DVD player?

Question

I was surfing for a certain foreign DVD I am looking for and got this message on the website warning me:

NOTE!!! If you have a NTSC-player make sure it also reads region code 0 PAL-format DVDs before ordering this DVD!!!

What does that mean? I'm not sure if my DVD player is NTSC or even what it means by that. How can I find out if my DVD player will be able to play this? By the way, if you know these DVDs work in the Playstation 2 system then please tell me because I could just play the DVD from that. But I would rather play it from my DVD player instead.

My DVD player is a Sony Progressive Scan DVD VHS combo. I bought it around 5 years ago. I also have a General Electric DVD player I could also use, along with a portable DVD player. It is a Mintek TFT MDP1750.

Please post the make and model number of your dvd player. more than likely it will not play a PAL dvd but we can check.


PAL was developed by Walter Bruch at Telefunken in Germany. The format was first unveiled in 1963, with the first broadcasts beginning in the United Kingdom and Germany in 1967. [1]

Telefunken was later bought by the French electronics manufacturer Thomson. Thomson also bought the Compagnie Générale de Télévision where Henri de France developed SECAM, historically the first European colour television standard. Thomson nowadays also co-owns the RCA brand for consumer electronics products, which created the NTSC colour TV standard before Thomson became involved.

The term "PAL" is often used informally to refer to a 625-line/50 Hz (576i, principally European) television system, and to differentiate from a 525-line/60 Hz (480i, principally North American/Central American/Japanese) "NTSC" system. Accordingly, DVDs are labelled as either "PAL" or "NTSC" (referring informally to the line count and frame rate) even though technically the European disks do not have PAL composite colour. NTSC, by contrast does define the video line and frame format.

Most DVD Players support the two formats (PAL,NTSC) When a disc is inserted in the player,it automatically selects the video format of the disc.If not there should be a switch on the back of the player to select either PAL or NTSC.or Auto.
Have a look at your Owner's Manual just to make sure.Hope this helps.

Most systems purchased in the US are only NTSC... Ps2 is only NTSC unless you purchased it in Europe... But there are some dvd players that do both... They are usually cheap unknown brands...
