Many New Yorkers carry a lap-top. Keep your eyes on it!
As a visitor, I recommed that you leave it at home. I think you can still rent a computer at FedEx-Kinko's.
Ladies, do NOT hang your purse, on the back of your chair when you are dining at an outdoor or indoor restaurant. Women frequently get their purse stolen by hanging it on the back of the chair.
Always keep your purse in your lap and keep an eye on the strap to make sure no one is trying to steal it.
Many women have their purse stolen while eating at outdoor restaurants because they hang their purse on the back of the chair and when it's time to pay for their meal their purse is missing!
Do NOT use a backpack, especially on the bus or subway, as some "guys" on the bus or subway, will remove it from you, before you realize it was stolen.
Often, on the bus, there are a team of young boys looking to rob someone with a backpack.
Keep your eyes open. Watch your personal items. Don't put anything important in your back pocket, wallet, hotel
room- key, etc.

Be discreet. Never display your valuables (jewelry, money, cameras, laptops, etc.). Be street-smart and be aware of your surroundings.
I rode the NYC subways to and from school and work for seven years safely, and my laptop was always in a nondescript carrybag which never leaves my hands. Just don't make yourself an obvious target for crooks, pickpockets and muggers.
Have a safe trip.

Absolutely, but like all big ticket items, be smart about it. Don't leave your bag unattended, don't pull it out at bad times (ie. use it on the subway during the day if there's room, but not late at night when there aren't so many riders). Have a great trip and enjoy the city!

I would advise you not to carry it in a backpack where you cannot control it. Instead, use a messenger bag so that you can hold onto it.

it's safe, as long as you are not walking with it in your hand.
