I heard a radio talk show this evening and they were discussing how the early Morman church had polygamy as one of their doctrines. The talks show hosts were saying how this was so wrong, and that God would disapprove of this. Not that I'm condoning polygamy....but didn't some of the great men in the old testament have multiple wives? Jacob in Gen 29:15-30 had two wives, I don't read the bible condemning them.

Sir Michael, I enjoyed your response, but I have an issue with your statement "In most cultures today, women are able to provide for and protect themselves – removing the only “positive” aspect of polygamy." This same reasoning could be used to justify doing away with marriage altogether, even 1-1.

I do not believe he disapproves of polygamy. Unless of course we are taking about those that condone abuse of young girls and incest, rape, etc. But polygamy was in the Bible and I believe that there is nothing wrong with it. I think it's better that a man have a legal obligation to another wife and family than a bunch of 'baby mama's' etc. Better he be married to them in the eyes of God and the law.

And what about swingers... people seem more ready to condone swinging than polygamy and how does that make sense?

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:" (Deut 6:4 KGJ)

"You shall have no other gods before me." (Exod. 20:3)

There are a number of possible explanations. First of all, the Hebrew word for "us" in this passage does not accurately translate into English. In Hebrew it can be considered both singular and plural at the same time. In other words, a singularity of being with a plurality of attributes. Another explanation is that the use of "us" is in reference to the trinity. Some have used this theory to criticize the trinity by stating that this sounds more like polytheism. They ask, "Is God talking to himself?" Finally, some believe that God is talking to the angels, whom are God's active agents throughout the Bible. Any of these explanations are sufficient regarding the use of the word "us."

Polygamy is not proper in our present generation. Apostle Paul said " A Bishop must be blameless, He must be the husband of one wife..." 1Timothy 3:2. Apart from this, second wife cause a lot of troubles. Even from the Old Testament, it is clear that second wives are rivals. They cause a lot of problems. they are sometimes 'adversary'. From the bible, we saw this happened. "And when the time was that el'kanah offered.he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: but to Hannah,he gave a worthy portion, for he loved Hannah. but the Lord had shut up her womb. and her adversary also Provoked her sore (bitterly). for to make her fret (irritable), because the Lord had shut her womb. 1 Samuel 1:4-6. Polygamy cause quarrels that is why Hannah was severally provoked. Also from the beginning God made them man and woman and both of them shall become one. God did not make them man and women nor men and woman.

i dont understand if it incredibly is a christian element, a ethical, or legal element. i myself do no longer have confidence in polygamy for ethical motives. while the bible says marriage is between a guy and a woman i interpret the a to intend one no longer many, yet as quickly as back my intepretation is motivated by my morals. plus the adultery element mixed w/ polygamy seems contradictory to me (as quickly as back it incredibly is by using my morals). definitely im no longer a sort of ppl who bypass around telling ppl they're sinning or going to hades. I incredibly have sufficient sins of my own to repent for w/ out regarding absolutely everyone elses. if it says contained in the bible its a sin then its a sin if it doesnt then its a ethical conflict. i visit confess that i do no longer understand no be counted if it incredibly is a sin (I incredibly have on no account seen polygamy an selection so I incredibly have on no account paid distinctive interest to the bibles address it), yet i do experience it incredibly is morally incorrect. that doesn't advise i've got confidence no person ought to do it bc its against my morals, it skill that i wont do it. yet another element to evaluate while finding at ppls perspectives on polygamy, is the raids on the "religious" camps contained in the previous few yrs (those that stress 12 and 13 year previous women to alter into the seventh or 8th spouse of a 40-50 year previous guy). most of the time u hear approximately polygamy, a minimum of contained in the u.s., it comprises little women and grimy previous men.

I can't say for certain whether God approves of polygamy or not. Its not my cup of tea, that's for sure. And all of our laws and customs through out the Western world and through out Judeo Christian history say marriage is between two people.

But whatever it is, I would say its not nearly as important to God as many other teachings He has.

DEUTERONOMY 21:15 If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:

DEUTERONOMY 21:16 Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn:

DEUTERONOMY 21:17 But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a DOUBLE portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.
