Yes, most Korean children walk to their neighborhood schools. [; Like Chachee said, you just have to make sure your children have some common sense about the safety precautions. (Plus, tell them not to talk to strangers. & The older students sometimes ride buses to their schools or get rides from their parents/guardians.)

It can be really shocking, even a tiny bit amusing, to see little five year old kids taking the bus or walking home by themselves but it isn't unusual. Korea is safe enough for kids to do so. The kids can be very independent and should know the precautions of walking home alone, etc. There are a lot of people around, and many people near the child's home are familiar faces. But one thing is, children are more likely to be injured by the traffic than by another human being.

Yes, Korea is one of the safest countries ive been to, you'll see kids as young a 5 walking by themselves, some koreans will come up and greet u and look and you and sometimes they will touch your hair, but its only because some are curious, the only thing you should look out for is their driving they are not the best drivers in the world so as long as they dont jaywalk they should be very safe.

I have a 6 yearl old girl and first thought is: How old are your kids? and How far do they walk?
Most danger they face is traffic. Our company has had 2 employees children slightly injured by errant taxis.
My daughter is too young.. her senses tell her to retrieve things that fall into the street and to hurry across a pedestrain crosswalk that is already blinking. (bad ideas in Seoul)
She is small enough not to be obvious to cars.
Seoul is quite safe and you will see Korean children, very small, walking to school alone. HOWEVER, we have had a very unfortuneate incident where a young girl, (american), was attacked by a taxi driver.. it is NOT like it can NEVER happen here.
My daughter is blond/blue eyed and she gets "petted" a lot on trains, at the ice rink, and people like to take their photos with her. For this reason, I do not let her go anywhere without me in public. It is scary for her, although she take most of it in stride. She caused a great stir at LotteWorld and Everland last year. Sometiems you have to step in and move her away.
So my answer is that it all depends on your kids and their ages.

Of course it is!!! Korea is the safest country I have ever been in. However, make sure you teach your children some common sense such as not jay walking. Not to walk in dark places. Phone if they are going to be late, better yet, give them a cell phone, it will cost you 10 dollars a month max and incoming calls are free.

You don't have to worry about much about kids nappings in Korea. Just make sure you can keep in contact with them.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Dawn. If your kids are Korean or look Korean you should be ok. If your kids don't look Korean and are still a little young to fend for themselves, I would recommend against it.
