It's just like every other big scare that we are told we have to worry about. They all go away sooner or later.

Global dimming is an observed reduction in the amount of sunlight hitting the Earth's surface as compared with measurements taken back in the 1950s. It is assumed that this dimming has been caused by levels of particulate matter and other chemicals in the atmosphere that reflect sunlight back into space before it hits the Earth.
As you said, global dimming cancels out some of the global warming caused by an increased greenhouse effect. That could be a bad thing, since it means that the greenhouse effect may be increasing even more quickly than had been thought, with some of the increase in temperatures that would otherwise have happened being cancelled out by global dimming.
A possible solution to global warming could be achieved by pumping just the right amount of particles into the atmosphere to create a global dimming that cancels the global warming. Personally, I'd rather take my chances with global warming.

Global warming, global cooling, global dimming and other similar events are all interlinked but have different causes and effects.
The primary cause of global dimming is the blocking out of sunlight from pollution in the atmosphere. In the last 50 years or so we've introduced many Clean Air Acts which have removed much of the pollution that was causing global dimming in the mid 20th century. In effect, we've stopped it from happening.
It is possible to engineer a situation where global warming and global dimming cancel each other out. To do so based on using global dimming would mean deliberately polluting our atmosphere with vast quantities of particulate matter such as sulphur dioxide (the stuff we poured into the atmosphere in vast quantities years ago). The downside to this is that it kills people.
The start of the worldwide introduction of Clean Air Acts was brought about by the pollution and fog which enveloped London in 1952, at it's peak thousands of people were dying each day, the UK Government passed the first Clean Air Acts and the world followed suit. The result was much healthier and brerathable air, a rapid decline in pollution related deaths but conversely it led to the return of global warming which had been masked for about 30 years.

It's a complicated scientific theory that hasn't even been proven yet. If you're interested in that sort of thing, then do some research. If it doesn't interest you, just do your best to live green and ignore the hype. It's gotten way out of control.

This world is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Real Wrath-of-God-type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies."
Rivers and seas boiling!
40 years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanos.
The dead rising from the grave.
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats, living together... mass hysteria!
