So most of you (Religion section of Y!A) probably don't know this, but... Those of us who read and post in the Science section (particularly Biology) have to put up with a never ending string of pseudo questions about evolution that are obviously just intended as a means of promoting a religious belief in non-religion sections of Y!A.

So my question is... Do you support these obvious misrepresentations of science for the sake of promoting a religion? Or do you think that these people are doing more harm to the religion they promote than good with these posts?

Of course any other thoughts about these kinds of posts generally would be of interest. Thanks!

WOW! What a tremendous response! As several of you guessed... yes, it's my first time visiting R&S, and I'm truly impressed by the responses here as well as with many other questions and answers I've been reading.

I'm going to leave the question up for a bit longer, but really... This has been very helpful so far!

Oh I certainly think that covering their ears to science is hurting their position. When you get one of them to really talk about it and you show them how much evidence there really is, it is starting to collapse their whole faith.

This didn't used to be the case. There are more Christians that believe in evolution than not. But their insistence that they can't both be right means that the argument moves into well established science. And when you get someone who has been told this nonsense all their life to really look at it, they keep asking questions.

Wow, thanks for stopping by! Those attacks happen here a lot as well. I suppose they are a little bit more in place here, but not much.

Yes the people who promote the idea that the bible is 100% proven and corollated by science, that Genesis is just about the best science book ever, are damaging Christianity and are damaging the possibilities of children from Christian families to become scientists.
Some people are religious but want absolute proof their holy book is true. These are the only people who are strongly opposed to evolution. Not the fideists (who believe and need no proof), not the people who accept the fact they don't know it for sure, just the people who are actually hungry for certainty from science. They want to validate their belief in the bible by science and are upset that science doesn't play along. You can't change their mind by arguing only about biology I think, you have to argue about religion also. Of course it's not fair to put that responsibility on your plate, but just the same, here's a site to refer Christians who are looking for scientific certainty to:

http://www.geocities.com/questioningpage/

this guy talks in great detail, step by step, about the problems to consider with Christianity as a possible rational certainty. He adresses the kinds of questions fervent creationists should consider, which are not "missing links" or "irreducible complexity".

I do believe that some go overboard in their way of aproaching the subject. I believe that the missing links that are needed to support the theory of evolution will never be found.

It is difficult to consider it as a science when evidence must be manufactured and guessed.

OK, mister biology guy; you should know the complexity of the reproductive systems of both males and females, but what is the possibility that both would appear at the same time. First the system has to work, then it has to have a mate in order to survive. Just changing from simple cell division to procreation (notice the creation in this word) goes against the principle of simplicity that evolution is supposed to follow.

I know biology too, but evolution can not even explain a single cell. Blow something up and try to get a new life form. It will never happen, but that is what is taught as science. A birth defect is considered as evolution, but in almost every single case, it leads to premature death. Why? It almost never results in anything beneficial.

One more question, where are the living examples of evolution? It is a neverending process, so we should see millions of live examples on this earth, but you haven't thought about that have you. (And evolutionists say that they are the only people who think, really?)

The question that I have is do you subscribe to the belief of evolution so that you will not have to admit that there is a God?

On a similar note, neo-cons are also using it so spread rumors and personal attacks on Democratic Presidential contenders. They asking questions like, "Do you worry about Barack Hussein Obama's past ties to his Muslim heritage?"

Of course he has no past ties, but it's just an excuse to say "Obama" and "Muslim" in the same sentence (and of course they never miss a chance to use his middle name, Hussein). Since they can't attack what he's done and what he stands for they have to make personal attacks based on fabricated fear mongering. They do it with Hillary and John Edwards too.

It's really pathetic, but when you've been as dismal a failure as the GOP has been over the last 6 years, I guess it's the only tactic you have left.

Well obviously any religious belief that contradicts objective reality is a false belief. This is what these people fear most. They realize that the denominational system they are part of is full of false beliefs. Otherwise the beliefs of one denomination could not conflict with the beliefs of another. Truth cannot conflict with truth. The prospect of looking at the evidence honestly is terrifying for them because it just might reveal that their own beliefs are among the many existing false beliefs. Of course, anyone who is in touch with reality, including clearly demonstrated scientific facts, immediately recognizes the false beliefs that lead these people to so desperately fight against the truth. Sad.

i think it's a good thing. so maybe the questions have a hidden agenda. if you answer them forthrightly, it will probably not convince the person who asked the question but all informed rational persons can see how darned silly the question was, plus they may also learn something. having said that i know it's very easy to get frustrated with them.

Attacks? Something proven can only be attacked by idiocy. I saw a q the other day that made fun of the proponent of the tail theory for humans. The coccyx is quite real. The opposable thumb... Anybody? What about "Lucy"??? No one can deny evolution. And if you are an xtian, don't worry, evolution does not disprove your god either. The book of genesis is a parable, not fact. Think of how many generations retold these stories before it could have been written down. We all know what happens when grandpa tells a story...

Welcome to R&S.

One of the common answers to those type questions here is take them to the Biology section where the experts are....

It is an unending list of questions attacking science, and the advocates of science, here as well. In fact there is even a drinking game some have when certain questions of that nature are asked.

Very funny you say that. Thank you. You there in Biology section may not be aware of the fact that in the Religion section Christians are in the top of who is the most mocked. And they are more mocked by atheists and evolutionists .

I think that for either side once they've made up their minds about something no matter what is put in front of them, they stick with what they 'know'.
Even if you have undeniable proof about evolution, deeply religious people will constantly try to disprove it.
At the same time I think if you had undeniable PROOF that god existed, atheists would constantly try to disprove that.
