If your tooth is abscessed, the pain won't go away.

You need to see a dentist so you can have antibiotics prescribed to take care of the infection. If you wait too long, the toxins from the abscess can go through your body, which will make you even more miserable.

Good Luck!

Chance is your tooth or gum has an infection. While there are very strong prescription painkillers that will work, my dentist always prescribed antibiotics to kill the infection several days before surgery. If the infection is still fully active during surgery the experience will be very unpleasant, even with injections.

Rinse the area with warm salty water (approx one quarter to one-half teaspoon to a glass of warm water)
Use clove oil which you can buy at health-food stores and some drug stores. Clove oil helps to numb the sore areaapply on cotton wool on a tooth with a "live" nerve toothache. The helpful effect is only temporary though as it gets washed away by saliva easily.
Cover the tooth with sugar-free gum to minimize contact with food and fluids.

Rinse with warm salt water. The salt will draw out excess water and bacteria and thus relieve inflamation. You may need to do salt water rinses several times a day, but the pain goes away faster and feels better each time you do it.

when i get a bad toothache, i rinse with a water/hydrogen peroxide solution (to get out any infection), brush with an electric toothbrush (to massage the gum) and then rinse with listerine (to dull the pain). It works for me.

If you are not a minor..you can take a cotton ball and pour straight whiskey on it and hold it on the tooth. It will temporarily deaden it.
