Pour a little ammonia into the trashcans. Dogs hate the smell and won't paw through the garbage. It really works.

It'd be messy, but you can train a dog not to. A friend did it by pouring two bottles of hot sauce over the top of the garbage. The German Shepard was locked into the kitchen with it, did the expected tear-apart, then was sick from the hot sauce, but it did stop him from ever doing that again. Everything else he'd tried didn't work. The dog had a hot mouth for a while, and barfed up what was in his stomach, so clean up was messy, but it did stop the behavior cold.

I know, it's considered animal abuse, but he did get results.

It might sound cruel but thewre items called " electric fencers." Thye are used to keep cattle and horses from breaking down the barbed wire fences that keep inside. Yes they are electrified with a relatively low voltage and amperage to keep from killing the animal. You could electrify the garbage can but be sure to use a low voltage transformer and one that delivers low amperage and also make sure there is a sign up somewhere to warn every single person that it is infact electrified and it might ba a good idea to just put the can inside a home made fence just big enough to hold the can anyway so the dog can't get to it, right? The electricity isn't really such a good idea!

I know you are going to get many answers suggesting what you can do to avoid the problem. But very few will suggest how to correct the problem. Train the dog to leave the trash cans alone. You don't know how to do that? You need to learn about dog behavior and how to train your dog. Enroll yourself and the dog in a good obedience class. This will give you the tools to teach your dog good behavior and how to correct bad behavior.

Putting hot sauce on the cans is aversion training. If you are going to teach your dog fear you might as well as roll up a newspaper and swat the dog everytime you hear it near the cans.

Do you put food in the trashcan? He will not stop doing that until you stop putting food in there. I use a small grocery bag or some thing like that to put table scraps in then take it out side to the garbage can. That might help you solve that problem........

Once they've found the "cookie jar" , it is hard to stop them. The best way is to keep the can sealed.

However, if you are desperate, there is another way. You can go some places like PetsMArt that may have noisemaking booby-traps. It is like a safe mousetrap, that makes lots of noise, with no ill effects. YOU set it, and put it on the trash can, and put one inside. When the dog goes sniffing, it makes a loud noise and scares him. It's not a good solution... but it usually works.

The electric collar works wonders in cases like that. I have used it with great success in man dogs with the exact same problem, including mine. It usually only takes one correction for a dog to stop doing it.

Recently my Jack Russel has started pulling over our kitchen bin and shredding all the garbage everywhere to leave me a nice suprise when i get home.
I put the bin up on the kitchen bench now, because he can't jump that high. If you have a large dog then place it somewhere where he/she can't reach it.

hi,
best think i ever did was to get counter high restaurant cans that hold 30 gallon bags . they can't reach it. i also always put yummy scraps (anything eatable) in a plastic acme bag first with a knot then toss. also ALWAYS toss out trash OR crate dogs when i leave...set them up for a "win" dont leave counter foods (including butter!) out as i have 4 great danes!! these few things work here i think they would work for you.
